Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e: News, features, and specs

According to Samsung, the legacy Galaxy Tab S2 and Tab S3 tablets continue to sell well, filling a gap for those who don’t want to spend money on the expensive Galaxy Tab S4 but still want a powerful tablet at a decent price. To ensure that these people don’t have to settle for an older device, it introduced the new Galaxy Tab S5e. The “E” in the name stands for Essential, which Samsung says means it’s still a premium product, just with a more affordable price tag.

The first thing that catches your eye is the appearance. Not only is it minimalistic and attractive, with a new metal one-piece design, but it’s also Samsung’s thinnest and lightest tablet yet. It’s only 5.5mm thin, which is an outrageous reduction from the S4’s already thin 7.1mm. Weight has also been reduced from 482 grams for the S4 to just 399 grams for the S5e. This makes it easier to handle and more comfortable to hold for long periods of time. It comes in grey, black or gold.

Entertainment and Bixby

Built for entertainment, the Super AMOLED display has a diagonal of 10.5 inches, an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, providing a screen-to-body ratio of 83 percent. There are four speakers on the case with an interesting and useful feature — the sound is optimized depending on whether you hold it in horizontal or vertical orientation. No more messy stereo separation, and there’s Dolby Atmos support with AKG audio enhancements.

Samsung is also pushing its artificially intelligent assistant Bixby further in 2019, with the S5e being the first tablet to come with Bixby Assistant. The tablet listens for the Hi Bixby wake-word using the far-field microphone and provides access to quick commands to change settings or launch apps or call up features like the weather. New to the Tab S5e is the ability to control SmartThings Internet-of-Things devices with Bixby, with tasks extended by the new Bixby-enhanced SmartThings app for tablets.

Accessories and technical specifications

If you’re looking to purchase accessories for your Galaxy Tab S5e, Samsung will offer a $130 keyboard case and a Samsung DeX dock. This increases the tablet’s usefulness for those who want to use it for productivity, and it has the same capabilities as the DeX Tab S4 on a base station, along with the same desktop-like menu system. However, the Tab S5e’s smaller Snapdragon 670 processor may not support multitasking as effectively, and it doesn’t support the S Pen either.

Other technical features include 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, a fingerprint sensor, a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, Android 9.0 Pie, and a 7,040mAh battery that’s good for around 14 hours of media playback. Interestingly, the tablet can also make and receive calls and be used to send messages when connected via a Samsung account linked to your Samsung smartphone. We’ve seen this integration of calls and messages work well on Apple products. They don’t have to be in close proximity either: For example, if you leave your phone at home, all calls are routed through Samsung’s servers from the tablet and placed as normal.

Price and edition

The Galaxy Tab S5e will cost $400 and fits between the $330 Tab A 10.5 and the $650 Galaxy Tab S4 in Samsung’s current lineup of Android tablets. It steps up from the purely entertainment-focused Tab A, but falls short of the full productivity experience offered by the Tab S4. Samsung is also targeting its smartphone owners by providing more reasons to buy a Samsung tablet — calls, SmartThings integration and Bixby — instead of buying an Apple iPad, for example.

That SmartThings integration is clearly key to Samsung’s strategy with the Galaxy S5e, as it’s offering a free Samsung SmartThings Hub to anyone who pre-orders the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e. Pre-orders for the Tab S5e are open from April 12th to April 25th, and the Galaxy Tab S5e will be announced the day after pre-orders close on April 26th.

Updated April 10, 2019: Pre-orders for the Galaxy Tab S5e open on April 12.
