Google’s window-mounted air conditioner could have its own window

A new patent application details the idea of a fanless air conditioner that’s quiet, doesn’t create noise, and doesn’t even necessarily use refrigerant to cool your home.

A patent filed this week solves a number of problems with traditional air conditioner designs. They are noisy, have poor seals that allow hot air to flow back into the house, block much of the view from the window, and prevent the window from opening further. Google’s solution to all of this is a fanless design that allows you to see straight through the machine while offering several cooling modes to reduce noise and power consumption.

Google’s idea works in a similar way to Dyson’s bladeless fan design. By using that concept along with a large section of insulated glass, Google’s air conditioner could let in light from the outside, reducing the barriers to the outside created by traditional window-mounted air conditioning units.

Moreover, Google’s design also looks at different methods of cooling the interior of the home. By making the air conditioner lower profile and fixed to the window frame, this would allow the window to be opened to allow air in. The air conditioner itself could also do this if outside temperatures are low enough not to require compression-based cooling.

As an intermediate cooling solution, Google considered evaporator loops that, combined with a smart thermostat, could help cool a house or room without consuming a lot of energy.

For a more powerful solution, the design also discusses the use of Peltier-based cooling, instead of phase change units, which help reduce the size of the air conditioning unit. In theory, this could also be used as a home heater.

This is of course just a patent application, so there’s no guarantee that Google will make such a product anytime soon. However, the company has shown a real interest in developing more smart home gadgets and products over the past few years, so making such a cooling unit and plugging it in with the smart help of Google Home wouldn’t take too much of a stretch of the imagination.
