Destiny 2 Season of Dawn Obelisks: How to unlock and use

If you’ve logged into Destiny 2 since the last Season of Dawn update, you may have noticed the mysterious obelisks on The Tangled Shore and Mars. These new additions to the game look a bit like planetary vendors at first glance, but they serve several purposes, which can make them confusing to interact with at first.

Here’s everything you need to know about obelisks, including how to unlock them.

Activating the obelisk

Obelisks currently appear on The Tangled Shore, Mars, Nessus, and the EDZ, but they must all be activated as part of separate questlines.

When you first log in, pick up the quest A Matter of Time from Ikore Rey. As part of this, you will be sent to the Tangled Shore, where the game will walk you through two simple steps to activate the first obelisk. To see the exact steps, see our Guide A question of time.

In order to activate the rest of the obelisks, you will need to fully complete the A Question of Time quest. After completing the quest and receiving your Seasonal Artifact, return to Osiris on Mercury and speak with him. It will have new missions for you to download, including Obelisk Link missions. Note that once you take one of Osiris’ missions, he will no longer show the rest. If this happens, just exit the conversation and talk to him again to restart his available missions.

To complete Mars Link, you will need to defeat the Hive on Mars. This is easily accomplished by heading to any of the Mars landing points and activating the Escalation Protocol, which will cause several hives to spawn. Once you’ve done that, go to the obelisk in the Braytech Futurescape and deposit your materials.

For step two, simply kill enemies with a super or collect orbs to fill up the progress bar. This can also be accomplished pretty quickly if you equip a super like Stormcaller that can wipe out tons of enemies at once. Again, return to the obelisk after completing this and interact with it to activate it.

For Nessus, you will need to kill Vex on Nessus and collect 50 intact Vex parts. The trick is that you won’t get the parts if you kill Vex with abilities or weapons that cause disintegration, such as Fusion Rifles. Most weapon types are fine, just be careful not to hit or throw grenades at enemies here. Go to the Obelisk, which is right next to the Exodus Black landing zone, and deposit the materials. You will then need to repeat the second step from the Mars link here, killing enemies with your super or collecting orbs to complete the progress bar. Once you’ve done that, go to the obelisk and you’ll activate it.

Finally, to unlock the EDZ link, you’ll need to defeat the Cabal on the EDZ to get 50 pieces of armor. Defeating a Cabal with a finisher will give you more pieces, so be sure to use weapons like automatic rifles or SMGs that can be used to whittle down enemies and set them up for a finisher. Rinse and repeat from there; follow the same steps as the other obelisks and you will be able to activate the one on the EDZ.

Some players did reported a bug which prevents them from activating the EDZ obelisk after depositing the necessary materials into it. If this happens to you, leave the area, come back and interact with him again.

What do obelisks do?

Obelisks are a bit like planetary vendors, as they have their own rewards and weapons that can be obtained from them. To use obelisks, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the new currency Fractaline. Fractalins are used to upgrade the Obelisk Resonance Rank, leveling each one up and unlocking more options.

Fractalins come in bundles of various sizes and can be obtained in several ways. You’ll get packs for reaching certain ranks on your season pass, giving you guaranteed drops.

However, the most consistent source of fractals will be from rewards. Each obelisk carries two weekly rewards, which will reward large fractal harvests. Make sure you fill them often, as upgrading the obelisk will bring more benefits.

In addition to the traditional rewards, inside each obelisk you’ll see weapon rewards, which cost both glitter and fractals. This will give you a random objective to get said weapon. One weapon reward will be available at resonance rank one, another at rank three, and a third at rank five.

These bounties are repeatable, meaning you can easily use them to farm for perfect throws on popular weapons like Bygones. The only catch is that you are limited in the number of weapon rewards you can carry at once, which is indicated by your Timelost number above the line.

You will also see a number of improvements. These are persistent perks that you can unlock in exchange for glimmer. These range from giving you a chance for planetary materials to kill enemies to increasing your time limit. The higher you rank, the more perks will be available at each obelisk. This row also contains special mods that can be purchased with Mod Components.

Sundial with obelisk rewards adjustment

Season of Dawn brings a brand new Sundial activity to Destiny 2, and you can use obelisks to customize the rewards you get for completing them. Each obelisk adds two unique weapons to the activity loot pool.

As soon as you activate the obelisk via the Sundial link, you will be able to acquire that weapon at the end of the Sundial. Hover over the first box in the Sundial Link box and you’ll see what weapons that obelisk adds. You will be able to acquire the following weapons.

Tangled Short Obelisk Link

  • Penetration Flashlight (Sidearm)
  • Steelfeather Repeater (automatic rifle)

Link to Mars obelisk

  • Martyr’s Retribution (Grenade Launcher)
  • Line in the Sand (Linear Fusion Rifle)

EDZ Obelisk Link

  • Gallant Charge (Fusion Rifle)
  • Infinite Paths 8 (Pulse Rifle)

Link to Nessus Obelisk

  • Patron Saint of Lost Causes (Scout Rifle)
  • Traveler’s Judgment 5 (Sidearm)

The catch is that there is a limit to the number of obelisks that can be activated at once. You can currently have two active. The season pass will allow you to connect the third one at the end, and there will be a total of five obelisks in the game.

Right now it seems you won’t be able to have every obelisk active at once. Fortunately, the second box in the Sundial Link row will allow you to clear all your sundial links for 10,000 sparkles, allowing you to activate the ones you want.

Obelisks are the key to getting new rewards in Season of Dawn, so take the time to activate and upgrade them whenever you get a fractal pack.
