How to add GIFs to Slack

GIFs are fun animated images that you could share in public and private channels or direct messages in Slack. Whether you want to say “good morning,” “great job,” or “happy birthday,” GIFs give you a fun way to do it.

Maybe you have a GIF you’ve made that you want to share, or you just want to search for it right in Slack. Anyway, we’re going to show you how to add GIFs to Slack.

Upload a GIF to Slack

If you have a GIF saved on your device, you can upload it to Slack like any other image.

Step 1: Go to Message field for the channel or direct message where you want to share the GIF.

Step 2: If you have a GIF nearby, you can drag and drop it into the message field.

Otherwise, choose Plus sign bottom left and select Upload from your computer or Upload the file. Then search for GIF and select Open.

Share the link to the GIF

For some GIF websites like Imgur, you can copy the link to the GIF and share it in your Slack message. The GIF is then displayed as if you uploaded it yourself.

Step 1: Select the GIF you want and open it Sharing options to get a connection. Copy the URL to the clipboard.

Step 3: Press input, Returnor Send and you should see your GIF sent to the recipient.

If the GIF page you’re copying the link from also has a Slack app, you may see a message to connect the app to Slack to share the GIF.

Add Giphy to Slack

Another option is to link a third-party app, and one of the most popular GIF apps is Giphy. Once you connect it to your Slack workspace, you can easily search for and share GIFs.

Step 1: Choose Add apps in the navigation on the left below applications. Enter the search term “Giphy” and then select To add.

If you can’t add an app, your workspace owner may require approval. Contact them for help.
