Destiny 2 Season of Arrivals: How to find and refocus Umbral Engrams

Engrams have always been a cornerstone Fate 2 loot grind, and Season of Arrivals doubles on that loop. The new Umbral Engram mechanic gives players more control over the random rewards they receive. Here’s everything you need to know about where to find Umbral Engrams and how to transmute them.

How to find umbral engrams

To start receiving Umbral Engrams, you must progress through the first Season of Advent mission. The mission sends you to The Drifter, who will ask you to place two new machines in his Tower area. One will decipher the Umbral Engrams and the other will allow you to customize them. After The Drifter gives you your first Umbral Engram, you can start receiving them in the wild.

Umbral engrams reward a piece of legendary gear. Like any other engram, these dark purple blobs will appear randomly. You can get one for finishing a match in the Crucible or find one lying around during the new contact event. Unlike regular engrams, you cannot decode these in Cryptarch; you have to use the decoder next to The Drifter.

While you’ll mostly get them randomly, there are a few ways to get them on purpose. First off, you’ll get a few as part of your season pass, so be sure to check them out whenever you’re ranked.

The main way to get them is through the Prismatic Recaster next to The Drifter. This works like most vendors, where you can rank it by laying down certain materials. Each time you progress, you will receive an Umbral Engram. The higher you rank, the more passive perks you’ll unlock, increasing the variety of ways you can drop them.

To rank higher, you will need Twisted Energy. The Prismatic Recaster offers various rewards, some of which reward Twisted Energy, so pick up as many as you can keep. Once you’ve collected 500 Twisted Energy, return to the Recaster and deposit them to get an engram and progress.

Customizing your Umbral Engram rewards

Prismatic Recaster isn’t just for getting engrams; it also allows you to choose the rewards you will receive from them. This machine works like a Season of the Worthy bunker, with prizes, benefits and reward options.

To customize your Umbral Engrams, open the Prismatic Recaster and examine the Umbral Focusing box. You’ll see three rows of options, with only the first few available to start with. Examine each one and it will show you what gear and weapons your engram will drop if you refocus it.

When you have an Umbral Engram in your inventory, simply click one of the options to refocus your engram. When you decode it, you will receive one of the listed rewards. There is still an element of randomness as each focus contains several pieces of equipment, but this will help narrow down the prize that will pop out of any given engram.

Your first two focuses per week are free, but after that you’ll need an Altered Element. Like Twisted Energy, this is a new material earned through Prismatic Recaster rewards. Always make sure to stock up on these rewards whenever you visit Recaster.

As you progress, you’ll get more advanced options, which can offer gear with a certain stat focus. Much of your time during Season of Arrivals will be spent ranking Prismatic Recasters, so take advantage of this mechanic while you still can to get exactly the gear you’re looking for.
