SD Gundam Battle Alliance is Kingdom Hearts for Gundam fans

When I started my hour long demonstration SD Gundam Battle Alliance, I was expecting a simple action RPG with chibi mobile suits that worship Gundam. What I actually got was a huge Gundam series crossover that can best be described as Kingdom Hearts, but for Gundam fans — a concept I fell in love with as soon as I got into battle with the Barbados Gundam in a completely different timeline/universe than it belonged in .

IN SD Gundam Battle Alliance, you play as a character called “Commander” and are assisted by a programmer named Juno Astarte in saving the G (Gundam) universe. The timelines of this universe are hit by anomalies called “breaks”. These interruptions cause characters from different Gundam series to appear where they don’t belong.

Together with your programming partner, AI and Gundam mascot, Hara, you’ll work your way through iconic mobile suits, locations and events as you battle characters from various generations to restore order to the world. Of course, there is Battle alliance an original character from an unknown organization that wants to stop you. Sounds familiar right?

Similarities to Kingdom Hearts are numerous SD Gundam Battle Alliance. You’ve got a dimension-hopping story, characters trying to fit into different worlds, and even two partner characters you can choose from various series to help you fight (with my favorites Donald and Goofy standing in for SD Gundam’s Musashi and Knight Gundam).

Hardcore Gundam fans will likely find themselves excited about all the franchise events mentioned and experienced in the game. In one part I fought against Zechs and the whole battle was followed by Gundam Wing theme. Moments like that, and other moments where themes straight from the anime appear, really made me fall more in love with the game during my demo.

It’s not just the references that make the game exciting. The gameplay itself keeps its end of the bargain. SD Gundam Battle Alliance is an action RPG and there is no shortage of fulfilling the “action” part of it. This is where you’ll find your standard combos, special combos, throwers, and even aerial moves. While none of it has the depth of a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta game, there are tons of possible variations in the multiple mobile suits you can unlock, customize, and upgrade. I found myself excited every time I unlocked another one of the iconic mechs just so I could try out what it could do.

WITH SD Gundam Battle AllianceLots of unlockables, customization options, dialogue trees and a straight up love for all things Gundam, I can see this being a must play for all fans of the series and a game worth playing multiple times. This makes it quite different from looking for an expanded audience Gundam Evolution. And for those who don’t like Gundam, this is still shaping up to be a good action RPG that has a lot of depth to get into. If you are interested in hack n’ slash game similar Shin Sakura WarsWarriors/Musou series or just want a fun action RPG with a compelling story, put it on your radar.

Now I’m just waiting for the full release to find out if my prediction that Char and Amuro or Heero and Zechs will be the Cloud and Sephiroth of this game comes true.
