The Mandalorian season 3 episode 2’s legendary Star Wars beast, explained

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3 episode 2, Mines of Mandalore.

After its lackluster Season 3 premiere, The Mandalorian is back with an episode that helps get the Disney+ series back on track. The episode titled Mines of Mandalore, sends Dino Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu to the surface of his eponymous, destroyed planet. However, his journey to the living waters of the planet takes a dangerous turn when he is captured by a malevolent alien lurking deep beneath the surface of Mandalore.

Luckily, Grogu is able to travel off-planet and bring back Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) to save Din. After doing so, Bo-Katan leads Dina directly into Mandalore’s living waters where she herself was once christened a princess. Dino’s redemption ceremony is unfortunately cut short when he is dragged underwater by an unseen force.

As Bo-Katan pulls him back up, she glimpses the beast responsible for Dean’s drowning: a massive, horned underwater creature that looks a bit like a mammoth. She sees, in other words, a living, breathing Mitosaurus.

Mitosaurus in The Mandalorian season 3, explained

Mitosaurs are legendary creatures from the Star Wars story.

The infamously huge beasts were first discovered on the surface of Mandalore in the Outer Rim and were supposedly eventually tamed and ridden by some of the first Mandalorians. However, Mitosaurs were believed to have died out long before the events of The Mandalorian. Despite this fact, the Mitosaurus skull has become one of the most traditional and popular symbols of Mandalorian culture.

With all of this in mind, it’s not hard to see why Bo-Katan is so shocked to come face-to-face with the real Mitosaur at the end Mines of Mandalore. Mitosaurs not only hold an important place in the cultural history of Mandalore, but the creatures were long believed to be extinct.

What does the return of the Mitosaurus mean?

The apparent return of the Mitosaurs is linked to a prophecy that has been uttered several times in both The Mandalorian and The Boba Fett book by The Armourer (Emily Swallow). The prophecy in question claims that the mythosaur will rise and herald a new age of Mandalore.

Of course, there is no telling if Mandalore will or could ever be rebuilt. However, the appearance of the Mitosaurus in the 2nd episode The Mandalorian season 3 certainly suggests that there may be more to the prophecy about the future of Mandalore than anyone has previously believed. If so, that means a new era for Mandalore could be upon us.

That’s not the only mystery fans will have to wait to see its resolution. Now that a new mythosaur appeared in the The Mandalorianviewers might also begin to speculate about which – if anyone – of the show’s characters, like their long-ago ancestors before them, will attempt to tame and ride the massive beast.
