Already miss Ted Lasso? Then watch these 5 shows that are just like it

In a world full of cynicism and negativity, Ted Lasso became a beacon of hope and faith. Jason Sudeikis plays Coach Ted Lasso, an American football coach hired to coach the English football team, AFC Richmond. Lasso’s quirky mannerisms and upbeat attitude win over the organization as his positivity leads to success. What started as a television commercial promoting the Premier League became an Emmy-winning comedy series. Who would have thought? To quote Paul Rudd, “Not me.”

Ted Lasso recently aired the third season finale. It is not known if this will be the end of the series. Sudeikis said he finished the story he wanted to tell. However, the show’s massive popularity could lead to new episodes, even without Sudeikis’ coach Las. If this is the end Ted Lasso, then it’s time to find a new show to watch. Below are recommendations for five shows that are similar Ted Lasso.

Bill Lawrence is one of the co-creators Ted Lasso, so searching his resume for similar feel-good comedies is the best place to start. Look no further than his latest Apple TV+ show, Shrinkage, which he co-created with Jason Segel and Roy Kent actor Brett Goldstein. Segal plays Jimmy Laird, a therapist struggling with grief after the sudden death of his wife. Laird turns to alcohol, drugs and women to deal with the pain, but forgets about his most important job, being a father to his teenage daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell).

While conducting a therapy session, Jimmy decides to be completely honest with his patient, which is highly unethical, triggering a series of drastic changes in his life and the lives of those around him. Shrinkage is a thoughtful, funny and touching portrayal of grief and the importance of honesty in our lives. If that’s not a selling point, stick with Harrison Ford’s grumpy, grumpy, charming performance as Segel’s boss.

Ago Ted Lasso and ShrinkageLawrence’s most famous comedy was Scrubs, a workplace sitcom set in the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. Zach Braff stars as JD Dorian, who arrives as an intern at Sacred Heart, a teaching hospital, along with his best friend and fellow intern, Christopher Turk (Donald Faison).

JD is the narrator in most of the series, while the audience hears his thoughts and monologues and watches his inner fantasies unfold on screen. Similar to how Ted Lasso emphasizes his characters instead of football, Peelings applies the same principles, choosing to focus on relationships above the medical profession. After you’re done with the series, listen to the podcast to watch Fake doctors, real friends experience the wonderful love affair between Braff and Faison.

Friday Night Lights (2006-2011)

Clear eyes, full heart, and what? I’m just guessing, but I estimate that 90% of you filled in the missing phrase with “can’t lose”. That famous sentence was recited by coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) in Bright Friday night, the television series inspired by the 1990 book by HG Bissinger and the 2004 film of the same name. Taylor is the head coach of the Dillon Panthers, a rural town in West Texas where the residents eat, sleep and breathe high school football. Taylor deals with the pressures of winning football games along with the challenges of raising a young man. Fortunately, his wife Tami Taylor (Connie Britton) is by his side every step of the way.

As Ted Lasso, the show gives several players their own stories, including eccentric running back Smash Williams (Gaius Charles), beer-drinking quarterback Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) and reserve quarterback Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford). Because of the likability of the players and the charm of coach Taylor, Bright Friday night will turn even non-football advocates into Dillion Panthers fans.

Stream Bright Friday night on Netflix, Peacock, Hulu and Prime Video.
