US woman returns from vacation to find her home demolished by mistake

Imagine this, you come home from vacation, only to find out that your home is no longer there. Sounds bizarre, doesn’t it? Well, for an Atlanta woman, this has become an unfortunate reality. When Susan Hodgson returned from holiday last month, she found her longtime family property reduced to a pile of rubble.

While Hodgson was away, she received a call from a neighbor who asked if she had hired someone to demolish the vacant house. “I said ‘no,’ and she said, ‘Well, there’s somebody here who just brought the whole house down,'” Hodgson told the AP.

When the neighbor confronted them, Hodgson said, the workers turned nasty. “He told her to shut up and mind her own business.”

According to the AP, she sent a family member to see what was going on and asked for permission. When the officer at the scene checked his license, Hodgson said he admitted he was at the wrong address.

“It’s been boarded up for about 15 years, and we keep it boarded up, covered, mowed, and the yard clean. Taxes are paid and that’s it,” she told AP.

Hodgson added that although she had spoken to lawyers and filed a police report, things had not yet been resolved.

“We’re still in the process of figuring out what to do,” she said. “We keep pushing in different directions to see if something happens.”

Atlanta-based You Call It We Haul It, responsible for demolishing her home, has yet to hear from her.

“How do people just go up there and tear down someone’s property and then just drive off?” Hodgson told the AP. “How can I think that’s okay? I just wish he’d come and fix the problem he caused.”

“It’s just hard to believe that someone thinks they have the right to just come and tear something up and walk away from it and not come back and say ‘I’m sorry.’ What should I do to fix it? It was an accident.’ They didn’t give me anything.”

The company did not immediately respond to a phone message left Saturday. In a statement to WAGA-TV, the company said it was investigating and working to resolve the accident.
