‘Halo 5’s player count is the highest in the series since ‘Halo 3’

True exclusive current-gen consoles have been few and far between this generation. Over two years on, even great games like Halo Infinite and God of War: Ragnarök are still tied to consoles that came before the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. While they still look fantastic and benefit from better load times and DualSense tricks, there were still not enough exclusives to give this new generation of consoles a real identity. This will be one of the most important tasks for Microsoft and Sony in 2023. We’ll see a much higher number of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S exclusives this year, especially from first-party studios. Games such as Forspoken, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Forza Motorsport and Starfield will be just a few of the games this year that will showcase exactly what a ninth generation console game feels and looks like. That means the stakes are high for this year’s biggest releases, as they have to prove that the gaming industry hasn’t stood still. A slow but steady start. It’s hard to believe we’re already over two years into this new generation of consoles, considering we’re still seeing high-profile games launch on old platforms. That looks set to change this year, as more games will be released exclusively for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to give those consoles more of an identity. However, it took more time than the eighth generation of game consoles: PS4 and Xbox One. Even the Xbox One, for all its flaws at release, had games like Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, and Ryse: Son of Rome to show what Microsoft wanted that new generation of games to look like. They did it through impressive visuals for their time and through Xbox One gimmicks like SmartGlass and Kinect. We didn’t see that as much with the Xbox Series X/S, as early-gen games like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 were deliberately multi-gen, and its more ambitious exclusives suffered delays. As for PlayStation, the PS4 admittedly took a few years to get going on the exclusive product front. Games like Infamous Second Son, Driveclub and Bloodborne ultimately impressed though, with fantastic exclusives consistently launching every year until 2017. The PS5 follows a similar rhythm, as Astro’s Playroom remains a PS5 and DualSense standout, while Ratchet & Clank : Rift Apart , Returnal and The Last of Us Part 1 show what the system is capable of.

Yet two of PlayStation Studios’ biggest releases of the past year, Horizon Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarök, came out on PS4 and still felt “last gen” as a result. One can’t help but think what both games could have done had they only launched on PS5. That’s a question I hope to get a firmer answer to over the next 12 months. The importance of console exclusives for 2023 As we enter the PS5’s third year, its upcoming exclusives will be some of the most important on the system. Forspoken might show off some impressive visuals early on, but Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is in an even more crucial position. It will be the first non-PS4 sequel to a hit from the PS4 era. The PS5’s high frame rate and customizable triggers already enhance Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man: Remastered when played on the PS5. I’m intrigued to see how Insomniac Games can push the visuals further, make more parts of New York to explore, and rock even more as Spider-Men on PS5. Hopefully, any other PS5 exclusives launching this year will do similar things.
