Honda reveals second Civic Type R concept with ‘more than 276 horsepower’

Don’t pinch yourself too hard, Honda enthusiasts. The extreme Civic Type R is real, hitting European showrooms next year, and it looks to be the best example of the famous red ‘H’ badge ever across the country.

Honda has unveiled a second Type R concept ahead of the 2014 Paris Motor Show, with the Japanese automaker confirming a new batch of specs for the hot hatchback.

The engine, the ‘Earth Dreams’ 2.0-liter turbocharged four, is now official with more than 276 horsepower and a 7,000-rpm redline. With these specs, the fourth-generation Type R puts all previous iterations to shame. It might even be better than the 290-hp, 2005 JDM-spec NSX-R.

“Honda has had four variants of the Type R – Civic, Integra, Accord and NSX,” said Suehiro Hasshi, Civic Type R Grand Project Manager. “The engine in this new Honda Civic Type R is unmatched by any of them in terms of raw power, torque and engine response.”

Type R enthusiasts love toys, so Honda wants to bring the Civic’s boy racer exterior into a cabin with plenty of track-focused gadgets.

The pinnacle of that philosophy is the debut ‘+R’ button, which changes engine torque, increases steering response and anchors Civic’s new four-point adaptive damper system.

“In its default standard mode, the Civic Type R is an extremely agile, everyday sports car with pleasant and smooth acceleration,” explained Hasshi. “The ‘+R’ button brings a more dynamic and athletic car for the driver, to quicken the heart rate. The difference in character is huge.”

The Civic Type R may be flashy looking, but this is undoubtedly a driver’s car first. For proof of that, look no further than streaming. There’s no disengaged DCT here; the boosted hatchback will only be available with a six-speed manual transmission. In fact, it’s one of the few vehicles that still does, which adds to the Civic’s pure driving experience. Hasshi agrees.

“The concept of the new Civic Type R is to be a complete driver’s car, so this was the best option.”
