This new Android tablet has an e-ink screen that destroys the Kindle

Onyx is one of the few brands that seems optimistic about the potential of e-ink displays, and produces some pretty impressive products at that. I recently received an Onyx Boox Tab Ultra with a monochrome e-ink display and was pleasantly surprised by its unique appeal. Now, the company is taking a big step with a new variant that replaces the black-and-white screen with a full-color e-ink panel on its latest tablet — something the Kindle has never been able to achieve.

Say hello to the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C, an Android tablet featuring a 10.3-inch color e-ink display. This one ups the resolution to 2480 x 1860 pixels, offering a higher pixel density compared to its monochrome sibling. Onyx has put what it calls the Kaleido3 display on its latest tablet, which promises “soothing and soft tones.” The e-ink panel looks and feels more like a newspaper than a glossy screen, and it’s also easier on the eyes with minimal risk of visual fatigue.

Onyx says you can work even in direct sunlight, while the internal ComfortGaze technology ensures that even nighttime screen exposure is as comfortable as possible. In monochrome mode, users get more control over the sharpness of content thanks to the 300 ppi output. But when consuming content in full-color format, the figure drops to 150 ppi. The panel also boasts its own Super Refresh technology, but the company won’t say if it’s actually a panel with a refresh rate higher than 60Hz.

Now this is a full Android tablet with access to the Google Play Store. However, its only downside is that it runs Android 11 straight away. Although the company promises firmware updates every three years, it is unlikely that this tablet will receive the Android 14 update, which is already out in beta and will be publicly released by the fall.

It’s powered by an octa-core Qualcomm processor paired with an “exclusive GPU,” along with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. Fortunately, there’s room for storage expansion via a dedicated microSD card slot. In addition, Onyx offers 10 GB of complementary cloud storage to all customers. There’s a 16-megapixel camera on the back, while a 6,300 mAh battery keeps the lights on.

The frame is made of aluminum, while the headlights are adjustable for maximum visual comfort. Onyx has priced its new tablet at $700, and also sells a magnetic cover for the keyboard, as well as a magnetic pen for taking notes on the e-ink screen.

It’s not the best deal for the price, especially when you have great options like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 and iPad Air, with far better specs and other perks. But if raw firepower isn’t your primary concern and you want to experiment with cool technology like an electronic paper tablet, the Onyx and TCL’s NXT Paper line are the best options you have right now.
