Nadella recently shared his regrets about leaving Windows Phone and the mobile market in an interview with Business Insider. He admitted that it was his decision that caused a lot of attention and criticism.

Nadella revealed that he regrets his Windows Phone decision when asked if there was any strategic mistake or wrong decision he regrets.

“The decision that I think a lot of people are talking about — and one of the hardest decisions I made when I became CEO — was our exit from what I’ll call mobile as it was defined at the time. In retrospect, I think there might have been ways to that we could make work by perhaps reinventing the computing category between PCs, tablets and phones,” the CEO told Business Insider.

Earlier in 2019, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also expressed his displeasure over the discontinuation of Windows Phone.

Bill Gates told CNBC: “We’re in the business of making operating systems for personal computers. We knew mobile phones were going to be very popular, so we did what was called Windows Mobile. We missed being the dominant mobile operating system by a very small amount.” . We were distracted during the antitrust trial. We didn’t assign the best people to do the job. So that’s the biggest mistake I made in terms of something that was clearly within our skill set. We were obviously the company that needed to achieve that, and we didn’t. We let this Motorola design win, and thus the software momentum, go to Android, and so it became the dominant non-Apple mobile phone operating system globally.”

When did Microsoft shut down its Windows Phone?

The first Windows phone was released with the Windows Phone 7 operating system in 2010. Although initially successful, the phone soon began to experience a decline. Over the years, Microsoft changed the model and upgraded it, but the phone still couldn’t keep up with the competition. Finally, in 2017, Windows phone was discontinued and the devices were moved to end-of-life on January 14, 2020, History-computer.com reports.
