Rowan said: “Being the youngest baker in the tent this year, I get the chance to flaunt my youth and let everyone know that I was only eight when the first episode of Bake Off aired. After watching every series without fail, I knew that one of my life’s goals would be to bake in that tent. When I got the call to say I had achieved that dream, I did the only appropriate thing – I slid to the floor, screamed into the phone and ran to the shops for a bottle of Prosecco, before coming back and joining the group wash… up in my university. Classy.”
Rowan added: “All the bakers became fast friends, so standing in the tent ready to bake with some amazing people when Alison walked up to the tent smoking a Hammond, her laughter as warm as the ovens themselves, was a moment I’ll never forget. I literally melted my bench.”

We see people every day and then we go home and many of us don’t have friends around. So we go from always talking to someone our own age to only being with our parents. Especially for me because I’m an only child, it’s hard. I know we’re talking about a cookbook, but I really wanted to talk about it because that’s the reason why [I made it].”

Rowan Claughton is a 3rd year English Literature student at York University. He wrote a cookbook under the title Hello studenthe combined his passion for cooking with the desire to create his own escapism.
The book started as a small project, “It was July, so we had already had a good time at home and I knew I had more to do. So I decided to perfect the things I love and put them in a cookbook. I mean, I’m not a graphic designer, I’m not a self-publisher by any means, and I’ve never done anything like that. But I decided to jump on board with Canva (a student’s best friend) and just put it up. I made sure that everything I love, even the colors and themes, is on that page.”
“A very attractive cookbook came out, if I may say so, all about things that make me happy, and it really lifted my spirits. I became much more involved in my life at home and made more of an effort to see my friends. After that I realized that there is no point in sitting around and talking about missing people. Just get up and do things! So that was part of the reason I did it.”
Rowan has experience in social media marketing which he started at the age of 15. It got a campaign from “Dominos, quite fitting as it is food and my first campaign ever.” His plan is to “continue marketing in the food sphere”.
“All the pictures in the book are mine, so I’m really into photography, especially food photography. If I could continue that in some way, it would be great.”
She plans to write more cookbooks.
