Rare deep sea fish washes up on California beach, people call it ‘stuff of nightmares’

Photos of deep-sea fish washed up on an American beach have been shared on social media. A hideous looking fish with a long appendage on its head like an antenna looks like a creature straight out of a horror movie. It is a fish that is “very rare” to spot.

Crystal Cove State Park shared something about the creature on Facebook. “Guess who washed up just in time for Friday the 13th? It’s an angler at Crystal Cove State Park!” the park wrote.

About the sea hook:

In the title, the park explained more about the species. “There are more than 200 species of anglerfish in the world, and this particular fish is most likely a Pacific football fish. Only females possess a long stalk on their head with bioluminescent tips used as bait to lure prey in pitch black water as deep as 3,000 feet!”

“Their teeth, like pointed shards of glass, are transparent, and their large mouths are capable of sucking in and swallowing prey the size of their own bodies. While females can reach a length of 24 inches, males only grow to one inch and their sole purpose is to find a female and help her reproduce,” the park added.

“It is very rare to see an actual kingfish intact and it is unknown how or why these fish ended up on land. Seeing this unusual and fascinating fish is a testament to the extraordinary diversity of marine life that lurks beneath the water’s surface in California’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and as scientists continue to learn more about these deep-sea creatures, it’s important to consider how much more there is to learn from our wonderful and mysterious ocean!” park wrote and concluded his post.

The post was shared a few days ago, and since then it has garnered a ton of comments. “What a strangeness in the ocean, that’s why I don’t swim at the beach,” a Facebook user posted. “The whole post is creepy and unbelievable,” added another.

“That sure is a spooky looking fish! But it’s also amazing!” expressed the third. “This is going to give me nightmares,” wrote a fourth.
