A 23-year-old man was locked in the vault of a jewelry store in New York’s Diamond District around 10 a.m. overnight. According to reports, he was finally rescued by New York City firefighters when the timer went off and the doors unlocked automatically.

The man became trapped in the 580 Fifth Avenue building around 7pm on October 24th and was eventually released around 6am on October 25th. The man is believed to have become trapped while trying to open his safe inside the DGA security vault. , reports ABC7.
According to authorities, when the vault doors are closed, they function like a clock, meaning they cannot be accessed until a certain time. Staff inside the facility closed the vault not knowing the customer was still inside.
The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) responded to the event by sending rescue teams to save the man, reports USA Today. After assessing several folds of the vault, the salvage crew began sawing away about 30 inches of concrete. After ten hours they reached the metal plate that had to be cut with torches.
“We determined that at that point, after about 10 hours, we would wait and see if the doors would open automatically. The problem with the plating is that we would have to use our flares on them which would infect the environment and that person inside the vault,” the deputy said FDNY Assistant Chief John Sarrocco at a press briefing, according to USA Today.
Rescuers used video footage and a telephone throughout the night to communicate with the man. He remained inside the 20-by-40-foot vault until the doors opened at about 6:15 a.m., when he was released. He was later examined by an emergency medical service, reports the Miami Herald.
