Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Like Likes are absolutely horrifying

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Realm it’s full of enemies that Link can destroy. Of course, lots of returning favorites from Breath of the wild return, like Moblin and Lynel. But there are also plenty of new monsters, from Zonai robots to the fearsome Gleeoks (returning from Link’s first adventure).

However, there is one new creature that steals the show. And by “steals the show”, I mean haunts my nightmares. Get to know each other Tears of the kingdomis absolutely terrifying I love it.

For longtime Zelda fans, Like Likes are one of the series’ most famous enemies. Usually represented as featureless pipes, these gruesome monsters can devour Link and eat his equipment. This makes them one of Hyrule’s most feared creatures, as dying after being eaten can sometimes cause Link to lose items forever. I still remember having to buy another fireman’s tunic The Ocarina of Time after one ate me and spat me off a cliff.

That’s why I’ve always been a bit afraid of Likes Likes, but Tears of the kingdom raises that terror to new heights. In Link’s new adventure, they are more grotesque than ever. Massive pipes cling to the walls and stare menacingly at Link through a circular array of prongs. When they open their mouths, they reveal a huge eyeball in the middle – their weak spot, of course.

Sure, they can still swallow Link whole and steal his gear, but Tears of the kingdom he goes a step further to declare them Hyrule’s most hideous monsters. This time there are several variants of Likes Likes that have different elemental powers. The electric ones fire shock charges at Link, while the stone Like Likes throw boulders at him.

They are the bane of my existence.

Even though I’m absolutely terrified of Zelda’s redesigned Like Likes and curse Nintendo for creating them, I secretly love them. They are small but a great example of one way Tears of the kingdom it pays homage to the monster series’ rich history while still pushing it forward. The new design acts as a fully realized version of the creature that old Nintendo technology couldn’t capture at the time, turning the fuzzy tube into a fleshy parasite. It’s just one of the many new aspects of the sequel that I believe fans will be obsessed with for years to come.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Realm is now available on Nintendo Switch.
