UK couple slapped with ₹11 lakh gas bill after not paying for 18 years

A couple from the United Kingdom received a bill of nearly 11,000 pounds (roughly Rs. 11 lakh) after not paying their gas bill for nearly two decades. Yes, you read that right. According to reports, after the duo received a hefty bill, they are calling to try to find out who was their gas supplier when they first moved into their home in Tamworth, near Birmingham, in 2005.

As the BBC writes, Lee Haynes (44) and Jo Woodley (45) claim that as soon as they moved into their new house, they solved all the utility bills, but ran into a wall when it came to gas. They even approached various organizations including National Grid to help them find suppliers, however, they all struggled. When Haynes and Woodley didn’t hear back from their supplier, they dropped the question.

Documents from their housing association and National Grid, both from 2006, testify to the difficulties in determining a gas supplier. After contacting the utility’s ombudsman, the couple claims the representative told them to hold off on contacting them until the supplier got back to them.

“It was very strange. After a few months we had bills for everything but not gas. I was worried that I would suddenly get a big bill – so I tried really hard to find out who supplies us with gas. The guy from the housing association tried all the suppliers they work with and said he didn’t know what to do. When the ombudsman said to just keep the paperwork and leave it at that, that’s exactly what we did,” Lee told The Metro.

When a letter arrived in March from gas wholesalers Cadent requesting an inspection of the property, the couple were taken aback. Cadent sent them a charge of £10,824.87 three months later. The couple still do not know who has been supplying them with gas for the past 18 years, despite receiving an official bill last month which gave them 30 days to pay the enormous amount, reports The Metro.
