Anyone who has ever watched The walking dead probably knows why the premise of the upcoming spinoff miniseries, The Walking Dead: Dead City, is more than a little weak. That’s because it connects Maggie Rhees (Lauren Cohan) with the man who killed her husband, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). And despite Negan’s efforts to make amends, Maggie has never fully let go of that anger. But in the new trailer for Dead city, it seems that their reunion is no coincidence. Someone from Negan’s past lures him into a trap, and he uses Maggie to set the bait.

Who is Maggie and Negan’s common enemy? For now, we only know that his name is Croat (Željko Ivanek), and that he personally led the raid in which Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim) was kidnapped. It’s not clear how Maggie made the connection between Negan and the Croats, but she strong-arms her former adversary to accompany her to Manhattan, which remains hopelessly overrun by hordes of zombies.

Regardless, there are some survivors in Manhattan who sympathize with Maggie and Negan’s mission together. There are also plenty of opponents, as well as some truly terrifying new walkers. In this trailer alone, multiple walkers appear to have fused into an even larger, multi-limbed zombie. It’s by far the scariest walker the franchise has produced in a long time.
Gaius Charles stars in the six-episode miniseries as Perlie Armstrong, with Jonathan Higginbotham as Tommaso, Mahina Napoleon as Ginny, Trey Santiago-Hudson as Jano, Charlie Solis as Bartender and Michael Anthony as Luther.
The Walking Dead: Dead City will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, June 18.
