How to reset an Apple TV to its factory settings

Apple TV remains the best streaming hardware you can buy, thanks to its impressive software and hardware integration. And that’s why it will last you for years.

Chances are you’ll never need to reset your Apple TV. But if you do—perhaps you’re giving it away, upgrading to a newer model, or it’s just frozen—it’s just a few clicks and a few minutes.

How to reset Apple TV

Please note that when we talk about Apple TV, we are talking about the latest Apple TV 4K, as well as previous versions of the hardware that do not support 4K resolution. Resetting your Apple TV should follow these same instructions, regardless of model.

Step 1: Grab your Siri Remote (yes, that’s its real name) and go to settings application

Step 2: Scroll down to System and select it.

Step 3: Choose Reset.

Step 4: Confirm whether you want to perform basic Resetor Reset and update.

Both basically do the same thing. But if your Apple TV isn’t running the latest software, the latter option will download and install the latest version of tvOS and then reset the whole thing to factory settings.

Unless you have a specific reason not to update to the latest version of the software, we’ll just choose Reset and update.
