Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ ending, explained

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves follows Edgin (Chris Pine) and his fearsome sidekick, Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), as they set out to rob a former compatriot named Forge (Hugh Grant) after they discover he betrayed them two years ago. In doing so, Edgin and Holga hope to regain the trust and affection of their former daughter, Kira (Chloe Coleman), who has been slowly but surely turned against her father by Grant’s Forge with his lies. However, in order to carry out their plan, Edgin and Holga must team up with Simon (Justice Smith), an insecure sorcerer; Doric (Sophia Lillis), a shape-shifting druid rebel; and Xenk Yendar (Regé-Jean Page), a compassionate and immortal paladin.

As the group faces more than enough obstacles on their journey, they eventually make their way back to Forge’s castle and the very vault where his wealth is stored. Unfortunately for them, it turns out that Forge was expecting their infiltration all along. After capturing the group, he allows his sidekick, a necromancy-obsessed red sorceress, Sofina (Daisy Head), to send them into the same arena games they wanted to sabotage. Fortunately, the group managed to survive the games.

What is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves about?

After that, they ambush Forge in a nearby harbor and proceed to sail away in his ship not only with all his treasure but also with Kira. On the ship, Edgin tells Kira about his plan to use the “Reawakening Plate” to bring back her deceased mother (and his ex-wife), Zia (Georgia Landers). However, before they get the chance to live happily ever after, Edgin and co. discover Sophie’s plan to unleash a cloud of magic that turns everyone exposed to it into mindless, immortal zombies. If she succeeds in this, Sofina will greatly advance the work of her necromantic mentor and leader, Szass Tam.

Instead of continuing to sail to safety, Edgin, Simon, Doric, Kira and Holga turn around. Using Simon’s magic wand, the heroes manage to draw most of the endangered civilians away from Sophie’s necromantic magic by using one of Forge’s egoistic balloons to redistribute their gold and wealth. Sofina, in response, starts a battle with Edgin and his companions, which almost fails. The group still manages to pull out a victory from the jaws of defeat by outsmarting Sofina.

When Sofina casts the same Time Stop spell that landed Edgin and Holga in prison in the first place, Honor among thieves‘ the heroes all freeze in place. Sofina, believing that she has trapped them all in an inevitable trap, gives a brief monologue about how all the efforts of Edgin and company have been for naught. However, Edgin’s masquerade falls apart when he laughs – causing all his allies to lose their cool as well. It turns out that Sofina didn’t realize that Simon countered her Time Stop spell, nor does she realize until it’s too late that Kira, using her invisibility necklace, sneaked up on her and placed a magic dampening bracelet on her wrist.

Doric celebrates her and her friends’ victory by turning back into an owl bear and beating Sofina to a pulp. However, the heroes’ celebration is cut short when they realize that Holga has been impaled by one of Sofina’s daggers. After watching Holga die in his and Kira’s arms, Edgin makes the decision – with Kira’s blessing – to use the one-time resurrection gifted by his Reawakening Plate to bring Holga back to life. Hours later, Honor among thieves catches up with Forge again as he is caught in the nearby forest by Page’s Xenk, who sends him to the same prison where Holga and Edgin spent 2 years. In the last scene of the film, Forge tries to escape in the same way that Holga and Edgin did, but to no avail.

Honor among thieves ends, like many others Dungeons & Dragons the campaigns that came before it, with all its villains beaten down and heroes just a little closer. By having Kira sneak up on Sofia, the film also reinforces one of the most important aspects of all tabletop role-playing campaigns: a team is only as strong as it believes in each of its members.

Earlier in the film, Edgin decided not to include Kira in one of his heists, and it ended horribly for both him and Holga. In the end Honor among thieves, he doesn’t make the same mistake and everyone is better off for it (except, maybe, Sofina). Edgin’s decision to resurrect Holga instead of his deceased wife also speaks even more to the found family bonds that are usually created in DD campaign, which is an aspect of the TTRPG experience that Honor among thieves nails.

Of course, in truth DD fashion, Honor among thieves it doesn’t end without leaving the door open for future adventures. In their last, mostly happy scene together, all the heroes of the film admit that Sophie’s master, Szass Tam, will not take well to the news of her defeat. Additionally, although he only appears on screen twice, the film makes it clear that Tam is far more dangerous than Sofina or any of his followers. Therefore, it should continue Honor among thieves is ever made, it seems safe to say that the franchise’s core group of heroes will likely be pitted against none other than Szass Tam himself.

Fortunately for them, if there is one thing Honor among thieves proves that Edgin, Simon, Holga, Doric and Kira are capable of defeating even the most powerful enemies, but only if they stick together.
