Report by Kathy Scruggs

The bombing of Centennial Olympic Park in July 1996 would have resulted in hundreds of casualties had Richard Jewell not been there. It was set in a spacious park as part of his responsibilities as a security guard for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Jewell was walking through the park when he came across a bag containing three bombs. tube. Before the bomb squad arrived, he called the police and helped them evacuate the area.

Thirteen minutes after the area was evacuated, the bomb exploded, killing one person and injuring more than a hundred. In the end, the cameraman who watched the tragedy died of a heart attack. Jewell was initially hailed as a hero for his role in stopping the attack and saving lives. However, three days later, the AJC published an article by Kathy Scruggs and Ron Martz revealing that the FBI was investigating Jewell as a possible suspect.

Following Scruggs and Martz’s investigation, the FBI searched his home and property based on a “lone bomber” record and placed him under surveillance. The media trial that followed had a negative impact on Jewell’s personal and professional life. However, he was acquitted of all charges and was once again hailed as a hero. Eric Rudolph has been identified as the real Olympic Park bomber. Jewell sued all relevant media sources, including AJC, for defamation after being acquitted.

The Death of Kathy Scruggs

Many of the journalist’s illnesses are exacerbated by the stress of having to defend her report in the Jewell issue. A year before her death, Scruggs took a break from the magazine for health reasons.

She suffered an injury at work that caused her frequent back discomfort. Painkillers were used to treat her back pain, but her use soon led to other problems. Crohn’s disease, stress and depression are listed as illnesses. According to family and close friends, her already fragile health has been damaged by the stress of the legal battle.

According to her brother, it was all due to her “giving heart”. Scruggs was found dead in her Woodstock home on September 2, 2001, just days before her 43rd birthday. Acute morphine poisoning or simply “medication overdose” was the cause of her death. It has never been determined whether an overdose was accidental or intentional.
