If you didn’t want to enter your financial information into your PlayStation Network account, you could previously buy full downloadable games from a retailer and then enter the code when you got home. However, this is changing as Sony will now only offer digital games directly from the PlayStation Network.
IN letter sent to GameStop stores, Sony explained that after April 1st, retailers will no longer be able to sell game download codes for PlayStation systems. Although the letter was sent to GameStop, it is emphasized that this will affect all retailers. Stores like Humble and Green Man Gaming have offered discounts on full game downloads in the past, and apparently won’t be able to do that anymore.
The memo went on to say that if a customer had already pre-ordered the digital PlayStation version of the game at GameStop, they would have to switch to the physical version instead. Exceptions to this are for The past few days and Mortal Kombat 11 next month, which will be available as digital codes one week after their launch dates.

PlayStation has had issues with system security in the past, and because of this, some gamers may be concerned about purchasing games directly from Sony. However, you’ll still be able to purchase PlayStation Network currency cards from retail stores, so you’ll never need to use a credit card during the process. GameStop is also trying to get more incremental versions of the cards available, too, with the tax required to purchase the game – without that, the $60 you put into your account might not actually be enough to cover the latest game.
Sony’s decision appears to further reflect a growing tendency for game publishers to leave retail stores out of the equation. With upcoming game streaming services like Google Stadia and Microsoft’s Project xCloud, gamers will be able to enjoy their favorite games without even thinking about entering a store. Of course, all titles released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch are also available digitally, which means the console itself might be the last thing you get from GameStop.
