Exoprimal: release date, trailers, gameplay, and more

Warning: A crisis has been detected. You can call it a dino crisis, but Capcom won’t. Exoprimal may look like the long-awaited remake of the Resident Evil spinoff series that replaced zombies with dinosaurs for a new twist on survival horror, but it’s not. It’s a brand new IP.

Revealed at the State of Play showcase in March 2022. Exoprimal was a very unexpected announcement from Capcom. We didn’t know what to expect walking into the storefront, let alone that Capcom would be there with a brand new game. Unlike other popular ongoing series and the recent release of new IP, Exoprimal it seems to be taking itself a little less seriously, judging by the trailer and premise — and it looks like a ton of fun. While it might not be the next Dino Crisis as some had hoped, here’s everything we know about the chaotic dinosaur-filled shooter Exoprimal.

If you’re looking forward to some dinosaur-busting action, you probably already have the hardware to play it. Exoprimal is out on nearly every major platform, including PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The Switch is the only platform left out, but by 2023 even the PS4 and Xbox One will be very old hardware, so it would be asking too much of this little handheld hybrid to expect it on the Switch.

Trailers

Exoprimal – Disclosure Announcement

Most of the footage Exoprimal so far it comes in the form of a State of Play event reveal announcement. Despite this, the game has progressed enough to give you a good idea of what to expect from it.

We begin with a city in the year 2043, with an android named Ivy addressing the viewer. She stands next to the Aibius logo and shows us the dinosaur forecast as if it were a weather forecast. We see a full week of “vorticity forecasts”, with different percentages for each day and night. As she continues her report, we see a soldier called an “exofighter” wearing an exosuit. This special unit is responsible for going into affected areas to combat the dino menace.

We see several different types of suits and then the vortex itself, a pink orb appearing in the sky above the city. It opens and, in a rather comical fashion, begins to hurl dinosaurs hundreds of feet into the sky. They all come out, swinging in the air, crashing to the streets below them. Somehow they survive this fall and go on a rampage.

Here we get a look at what appears to be our main cast of characters. There’s a large bald man with dog tags, another female android, a bespectacled man on a computer, a sleeping pilot, and the redhead that made everyone so convinced this was going to take place in the Dino Crisis universe.

The trailer begins to cut to various conversations, and we learn that these vortices had been appearing for over two years by the time the game started, that the redhead had aspirations of being Aibius’ best exo suit pilot, and that the same company was responsible for not only predicting of these dinosaur portals, but also the development of exosuits to fight against them. They continue to be developed by an artificial intelligence named Leviathan, which also provides a way for humanity to predict these vortices. More people are being recruited into exofighters, which is perhaps where we, as a player, come in. The trailer ends with a mysterious figure entering Aibius as a new recruit.

Leviathan, however, appears in later trailers to be the main antagonist who somewhat controls the vortexes.

Considering the online nature of this game, which we will describe in detail below, we have no doubt that the action is the main component of this game.

Exoprimal – Story Trailer

A full story trailer was then shown during Tokyo Game Show 2022. It starts with what we already know — space-time distortions are throwing dinosaurs all over Earth. What is new is the environment of Bikito Island, which is apparently closed, except for the exofighters patrolling it.

In the cutscene, we see a figure dressed in black who can teleport into an exohunting craft and attack the crew. There also appears to be a threat, or at least a suspicion, of double agents within the exofighters. The trailer ends with the aforementioned unknown figure taking off his helmet, but cuts off before their faces are revealed.

Exoprimal – Official Open Beta Announcement | Capcom in the spotlight

The open beta trailer reiterated most of the same plot details we already knew, but adds details yes Exoprimal it also appears to be a time loop game. There are also parallel versions of exofighters that we will interact with.

Playing

Now for the good stuff. We have a lot of gameplay in this reveal, though mostly quick cuts. What we do know is that Exoprimal is a team-based third-person action title in which you control a unique exo suit in battle against hundreds and hundreds of dinosaurs. Think something like Earth Defense Force or Dynasty Warriors, only with suits made from something similar Anthem maybe. Each suit has its own look and set of tools. We see one with a force field that looks like it was taken out Overwatchwhile others can pull about half a dozen guns from their arms and shoulders, and some even seem more focused on dual-bladed and slashing combat.

Three roles have been shown so far: attack, tank and support.

Attacker roles are described as, you guessed it, main damage dealers. They can operate at short, medium and long distances, depending on your chosen load.

Tanks are intended to protect the team and repel attacks. They have the largest health pool and should be your frontline units.

Support units can heal as well as use various parry and parry skills, such as increased movement speed.

Between these three roles, we saw four exosuits: Deadeye, Zephyr, Roadblock and Witchdoctor. The first two are both assault and the last two are tank and support. One interesting thing we only get a glimpse of is the ability or state of being forced out of the exosuit. We see the pilot getting out of one, and in another shot also getting into the suit. Whether this means your suit can be destroyed and still have a second chance to escape, or you have the option to switch suits during the match, remains to be seen.

What makes this co-op game a little more unique, aside from the premise, is that the main gameplay will also have a competitive twist. Not between you and the other members of your squad, but your team competing against another team to complete the mission first. The main mode of operation Exoprimal, titled Dino Survival, is described as a test for squads to take down more dinosaurs than the opposing team while completing other objectives such as holding onto certain zones or escorting cargo from point to point. Each mission is dynamically created based on your skill and “other factors” to make each match unique.

Since these two teams are on the same map at the same time, there is an opportunity for your two teams to clash, but also cooperate if there is such a great threat that you can put your differences aside. Among the dino threats we see raptors, flyers that look like pterodactyls and the big bad T-rex.

We can also easily see the long progression system implemented here to have players try to run missions for XP, upgrades, loot, and possibly cosmetics.

Exoprimal – Game announcement | Capcom Showcase 2022

Capcom gave us a detailed gameplay announcement during their presentation in 2022. Here we are introduced to the island of Bikitoa where “live combat tests” take place. These tests, which appear to be multiplayer modes, are Dinosaur Cull, VTOL Defense, Data Key Security, Omega Charge and Energy Taker. The focus, however, is on the tracks of Carnage mode which looks like a survival mode where you face an endless swarm of raptors for as long as possible. We get a few more looks at the new weapons and skills that each exo suit has dotted throughout the trailer.

More players

A team of exofighters on the street.Capcom

Exoprimal can only be played in multiplayer. This is an online only game, so while we don’t know if AI companions and opponents are options, you are want you must have an internet connection to play this game. We suspect there will be some form of bot options since the official site lists the number of players as one to 10, but we can’t say for sure yet. In either case, having two teams of five exofighters is clearly the intended playstyle Exoprimal.

Like almost all multiplayer games, Exoprimal will also have two battle passes called Survival Passes. The season 1 version is shown, and it has a free version and a paid version.

The big question that needs to be answered is whether the game will feature crossplay. We can reasonably assume that people on the same family of consoles, such as PlayStation 4 and PS5, will be able to play together, but we don’t know if all Xbox, PlayStation, and PC players will be able to shoot waves of dinosaurs together. For a game that depends on an online experience, it would be a huge blow to the player base to split, but until Capcom makes an announcement, we’ll have to wait.
