The moon is the center of Karwa Chauth. Married women start their fast at dawn and continue until the moon rises. There are different stories and beliefs about the significance of moon sighting during Karwa Chauth. As:
- According to Hindu mythology, the Moon, the ruler of the mind, is the brother of Maa Laxmi and the god of medicine. So, when a woman looks at the moon through a sieve, it represents scattered thoughts associated with the moon as the center.
- Then, by worshiping the Moon, married women are believed to seek a happy and prosperous married life from the goddess Parvati, the symbol of eternal marital happiness.
- While in various parts of North India, the moon represents Lord Shiva and his son Lord Ganesha. Looking through the moon is like sifting negativity and bad vibes through life.
