How to swim in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons the summer 2020 update introduced tons of new content. Players interacted with a new non-player character (NPC), saw new recipes for a bunch of summer furniture, and—most importantly—were finally able to swim!

There’s a lot lurking in the ocean, but luckily Nintendo has made it easy to safely navigate the waters surrounding your island. Here’s everything you need to know about swimming Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Collect the appropriate equipment

You head to the beach in your coolest outfit ever and suddenly realize you can’t get in the water. Uh, you said we could swim now, right? Yes, but first you need a wetsuit.

To get it, go to the Nook’s Cranny and look at the cabinet where plants, tools, and wallpaper are usually kept. You will see a randomly selected wetsuit design. Buy one of these – our horizontal striped suit costs 3000 bells – and put it on to enable your swimming ability.

You also have the option of wearing a snorkel. You won’t be able to swim faster, stay underwater longer, or blow colorful bubbles (that would still be cool, right?). Instead, it is nothing more than a fashion statement. A neoprene suit is still mandatory.

You can also get a unique Nook branded wetsuit by visiting the Nook Shop at Residential Services. choose Redeem Nook Miles and buy it for 800 Nook Miles. A snorkel costs an additional 500 Nook Miles.

Go jump in the water

Although swimming is a much needed dynamic to make the island feel less isolated, you cannot swim to other islands. In fact, you’ll see a net of ropes surrounding the entire island, mostly submerged just near shore, limiting how far you can actually swim.

On the other hand, you can swim around the entire island (without getting any less tired) and get to places you wouldn’t otherwise be able to visit without terraforming. But ultimately the only way to visit another island is to catch a plane, not with a mask and snorkel. Your limited access to the waterfront gives you enough space to fill Critterpedia, and that’s about it.

After putting on your wetsuit, walk down to the nearest beach and stand at the water’s edge. Here’s how to jump in and swim:

Step 1: Press AND button on your controller to enter the water.

Step 2: Continue tapping or holding Key to start swimming. If you don’t press the button, you can still paddle around slowly by moving the left stick.

Step 3: To get out of the water, just point your Islander towards the shore. The islander will automatically pull out when he gets close enough.

Diving under water

Of course, before you leave the water, you’ll probably want to take advantage of the new diving mechanic.

Step 1: While swimming, press The Y button dive under water.

Step 2: While underwater, press Key and manage with Left thumb swim under water. You will usually use this when fishing for elusive fish.

Step 3: Press The Y button resurface.

An islander can only remain submerged for ten seconds after pressing the Y button, but there is no limit to the number of dives before having to exit the water and take a break (unlike real people).

Look for sea creatures

Jon Bitner / Digital trends

Swimming and diving are fun pastimes in themselves, but New horizons also introduced a brand new Critterpedia page for players to discover in the form of sea creatures. They can only be found in the ocean, and players must dive underwater to find them.

As you swim, you’ll see tons of sea creatures approaching without actually seeing what they are. You’ll know they’re close when you see a bunch of bubbles on the surface of the water, and then you can dive in and enter the underwater world. The camera will move to a more vertical position, allowing you to see the shadow underwater. Place your islander on top of this dark spot and they’ll grab an unknown object, exposing you to a whole new set of quips.

To catch the fish, you’ll need to act fast, diving into the deep blue waters for these elusive sea butterflies to grab them while they’re still within reach.

Donation of sea creatures to the museum

Unlike the updates presented by Redd and the Art Exhibit, the sea creatures do not have a new wing at the museum. They will join the existing collection of fish that is already on display in the museum. Bring your first sea creature to Blathers and he’ll instantly show it off with all your other catches.
