Plex adds a new artwork-centric option to its visual experience

Plex, the company that lets people easily manage and access their personal library of movies, TV shows, music and photos, is introducing a new look for its on-screen interface. Dubbed “Modern”, it takes advantage of the artwork for the selected movie or TV show to create a more immersive look, instead of the typical poster design on a black background that has defined the Plex experience for years. The new design will appear today on Apple TV and Roku clients, and Android TV soon. Eventually, other Plex clients will be included.

The new look can be seen on the Plex home page, as well as on the TV Guide and details pages that appear when you select a title from your library. Fortunately, if you’re not a fan of the modern look, you can choose to keep what Plex now calls its classic interface. If you opt for a modern design, Plex gives you control over how the artwork and background colors intertwine. You can decide whether you want Plex to automatically fetch the background colors from the title artwork, or if you want to stick with the default black gradient.

Plex's modern visual interface.Plex

According to the Plex blog, the goal was to “put the film’s image front and center and have the user interface enhance—rather than compete with—the poster art.” This approach is most obvious on the Plex home screen. Previously, movie and show posters were presented as a grid, with titles appearing just below the poster. Since this didn’t leave much room for text, longer titles became truncated and you could only see them as scrolling text when you moved the active selection over the movie you were interested in. With the new interface, movie or series posters act as their own titles — the theory being that most posters communicate their titles pretty well. Hovering over a specific title displays all show-specific information (title, description, year, running time, etc.) at the top of the home page, along with a background inspired by the artwork.

Plex claims that the modern interface is the result of significant user consultation:

“We invited our test users to try out the new user interface available in several of our big screen apps. As the experiment ran for several weeks, we closely monitored feedback from users as they posted on our forums. More than 350 (and growing!) comments were made on the subject of the experiment, providing a wealth of constructive feedback, ideas and discussion.”

These comments were then taken into account as the Plex design team worked out the final details.

In addition to letting you manage your media library more efficiently, Plex has introduced several additional features over the past two years, including:
