Can Roomba map different floors?

There are many reasons why you might need different levels of mapping. Maybe you’ve moved or want to take your Roomba with you to clean your guest house or vacation home. Maybe you have a multi-story house and want to keep it neat and tidy. iRobot has made creating a floor plan for all your spaces quite simple. You can tag rooms and even set a cleaning schedule for each area.
iRobot Roomba bots, including the newer i6 to i8+, s9 and S9+, the all-new iRobot Roomba j7+, and even the m6 mopping robot, can create multiple maps for different floors and spaces.
How does iRobot map the different floors?
Newer iRobot bots have a lot of smarts and a lot of sensors to help the robot navigate your space. Basically, Roomba robots use a technology called vSLAM or Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping. As the robot moves around the room, it looks for unique areas that it considers landmarks. The bot remembers the location of these landmarks, so it can orient itself every time it goes outside. It uses vSLAM to create what iRobot calls Imprint Smart Maps, and the Smart Map can store multiple maps in its memory.
How to set Roomba to map different floors
You might think that adding new maps or instructing a robot to map another floor requires a lot of technology and work on your end. In fact, Roomba is smart enough to figure this out on its own. Here’s how to set up your robot so it can take care of your entire home.
To create a map of your home’s new floor plan, place the Roomba somewhere on that floor and send it to work cleaning everywhere. You can press Clean button on the robot vacuum or start the job from the iRobot app.
Keep your charger or base station where they are, as the robot uses the base station as the main reference point for the house. If you want to add another charging station or base station (or one of iRobot’s Clean Base automatic dirt removal units) on the second floor, an extra one can be obtained from the company.
How long does Roomba take to map a floor?
Roomba often takes a few passes to map out a new floor, so you can send it multiple times a day or schedule regular cleanings. There is also the option of working with mapping only where the robot will patrol the house with low power, which offers a faster way to vSLAM space.
