The Last of Us finale makes a subtle change from the game to set up season 2

HBO viewers were rocked by the finale on Sunday night The last of us, which brings the iconic ending of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed game to life in live action. It was an extremely faithful adaptation, without major deviations from the original material. However, a key change has been made that will help the series transition more gracefully into its adaptation The Last of Us Part II.

Note: Spoilers for The last of us TV show and Video game The Last of Us Part II follow.

On top The last of us In the final episode of Season 1, we see Joel destroy most of the Fireflies and the doctors at the Salt Lake City hospital as they prepare to operate on Ellie to get the medicine, killing her in the process. It’s a chilling sequence that hits the same dubious, morally awful notes as in the game, and little has changed.

We see Joel kill the surgeon who was about to operate on Ellie after he took the scalpel and said he wouldn’t let Joel take it. Joel shoots him in cold blood, but does not kill the nurses who help him. As he leaves the room with Ellie, the shot lingers on the now-deceased surgeon’s face, emphasizing Joel’s carnage.

That may sound like a small cinematic quibble, but that lingering shot is very meaningful to those of us who have played The last part of us II. In the original game, we don’t think much about Joel’s sacrifice; he’s just some nameless doctor. IN Part II, however, we meet the doctor’s daughter, Abby, who is out for revenge. What is a reckless action for Joel becomes deeply personal for someone he has never met.

By adding that extra punch, the finale sets it up more confidently. Even if casual viewers don’t know it yet, it’s setting the stage for something that will be very important next season and makes it clear that the show knows where it’s going.

The finale further teases what comes with the clever part of the cast. Curious fans may notice that one of the nurses during the scene is played by Laura Bailey, who portrays Abby in the The Last of Us Part II. It’s probably just the show paying homage to the actors in the game (as episode 8 did with Troy Baker, who lent the voice of Joel in the video games), but it’s also another way to tease what’s to come in the next season. Abby comes to get Joel. Get your golf balls ready.

Of course, when Naughty Dog came out The last of us in 2013, it was not yet known that this doctor would play such a key role in the sequel’s story, so he was not given as much focus in the game. The developers retroactively tried to correct this by retelling the sequence from Abby’s perspective in the The Last of Us Part II and updated models in the game remake.

Showrunners Craig Maizin and Neil Druckmann have the advantage of knowing the importance of this moment from the start and not being tied to Joel’s third-person perspective. Now they can take the time to linger with footage like this, highlighting what Joel has done and laying the groundwork for what’s to come. It’s a short and subtle shot that deviates a bit from the original game, but it’s also something that can only be done on this TV show and is sure to be extremely important to the series as we head into season two.

The last of us is available to stream on HBO Max.
