On his 35th birthday, Virat Kohli decided not only to have a good day for himself but also to gift it to the whole country. Virat Kohli equaled the world record of 49 ODI hundreds which was earlier broken by Sachin Tendulkar. The man broke the record in the 2023 World Cup match between India and South Africa, held in Kolkata, on the special occasion of his 35th birthday.
After equaling his record, Virat Kohli expressed his joy in a statement saying that any opportunity to play for the country is huge for him. He further expressed that it was a dream come true for him to do this in front of so many people on his birthday and that it was something he wished would happen as a child. He added that he is extremely grateful to God for such moments in his life and to his fans for so much love.
The man hit a hundred off 119 balls, equaling the record. It was in the 49th over of the match in India’s innings when he hit the milestone. Virat Kohli has equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record. Sachin reached his 49th century in his 451st ODI innings. However, Virat Kohli scored the record in his 277th innings from 289 matches. He took India’s score to 326.

It was in the 6th over of the match that Virat Kohli started his innings. Shubman Gill was bowled in the 10th over at 93 for 2. Kohli said it was actually a tricky wicket to bat on. “We had a great start through Rohit and Shubman and then when I came in, my job was to keep that momentum going, but as soon as ten overs went by, the ball started to catch and the wicket started to slow down as the ball got old,” said the man.
“Our roles are different – me and Shreyas, we wanted to be partners, and to be honest, as soon as we lost Shubman and Rohit within ten overs, my role was to bat deep and bat to the end because that’s what I did during year and that’s what the communication with the team was good; I’m batting and guys are batting around me and then Shreyas started batting a few. So we didn’t think we’d get 327 but that’s what happens when you dig deep and take the game in the last few overs, then you can get a bit more than you thought,” he further added.
With a third wicket stand of 134 off 158 balls, Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were successful in keeping India’s momentum going.

Kohli stated that Iyer and Kohli had a lot of practice before going to the Asia Cup. Both of them batted together in those training sessions. Kohli told Iyer that this partnership is what needs to take center stage at the time of the middle overs.
Virat Kohli currently holds two hundreds in the ongoing World Cup 2023. In a total of eight league matches so far, he has completed four half-centuries. Currently, Virat Kohli is the second highest scorer in the tournament. The top scorer in the tournament is Quinton de Kock from South Africa. It is the first time that Quinton de Kock has scored more than 500 runs in an ODI World Cup.
In the year 2023, Kohli holds the score of more than 1000 runs and 5 centuries. This is the eighth time that Kohli has scored more than 1000 ODI runs in a year, successfully surpassing SachinTendulkar’s record of 7.
