Kozhikode in Kerala and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh have received global recognition as they are now part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. On World Cities Day, UNESCO published a list of 55 new creative cities. Kozhikode and its literary legacy

Kozhikode is popular for its prestigious literary culture. Currently, the city holds the prestigious title “City of Literature”. This marked a major turning point for the entire country. The road to this great achievement began in 2022. Credit goes to a proposal from the Kerala Institute of Local Government. Just when the idea was proposed, the Kozhikode Corporation started its actions. The corporation shook hands with the University of Prague in the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic is the first city to receive this prestigious title in 2014.

Ludmila Kolouchova, a research student at the University of Prague, played an important role in Kozhikode’s success. She conducted a comparative study between Prague and Kozhikode which shed light on the strong literary base of the city which is housed in around 500 libraries and consists of works by more than 70 publishers. The city’s role as a permanent venue for the annual Kerala Literature Festival, along with countless book festivals, also supports the claim.
