During Soering’s trial, she testified that she tricked her ex-boyfriend into committing the murders because her parents wanted them to break up. She was sentenced to 90 years in prison and served 32 of those years at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women in Troy, Virginia, before being released in 2019.
Elizabeth received a sentence of 45 years for each murder, to be served consecutively. After police zeroed in on Haysom and Soering, who were not initially suspected of murdering Elizabeth’s parents, the couple left the country and were later arrested in England.
The state of Virginia previously denied 14 parole applications from Elizabeth and her ex-boyfriend. However, in 2019, they received parole conditional on their deportation to Canada, and her ex to Germany.
As part of the terms of his parole, Jens is barred from returning to the US or approaching family members of the victims, including Elizabeth Haysom.
Jens revealed that they were given no reason why they were suddenly granted parole after 36 years.
As of 2014, a Capital News Service analysis found that Virginia granted only six percent of parole cases. In a statement, Adrianne Bennett, the parole board president at the time, called Soering’s claims of innocence “without merit” but noted that his and Haysom’s deportation would save taxpayers money and fit the circumstances.
