ChatGPT let’s you build your own chatbot without coding. Here’s how

Did you like my chatbot idea for board game rules? OpenAI did, so they made a custom bot out of it and now you can build one of your own custom GPT models, share them with others, and even start selling them to people later this month. You can enter APIs and plugins, web access and the latest training data until April 2023.

Here’s how to make your own custom GPT chatbot.

You’ll need a GPT-Plus subscription to use the new custom GPT feature, so be sure to sign up (or borrow a free trial from someone) if you want to try it out.

Create a custom GPT

From now on, most of the time you use ChatGPT, you’ll be using a custom GPT model that you or someone else has made. Here’s how to get started with your own.

Step 1: Go to the ChatGPT website or open the ChatGPT app and login.

Step 2: Choose Create a GPT button at the top of the page.

Note: If you only see the standard ChatGPT window you’re used to, you may not yet have access to the Custom GPT feature. It’s being rolled out globally at the time of writing, so just wait a day or two and try again.

Step 3: Give your custom GPT a name, a description, and its custom instructions. Think of this as the instructions you might have given ChatGPT some time back as preambles to your query, but preambles that will only be used by this custom GPT.

Use the Preview window on the right to see how the AI will look and work. You can give it a prompt to see how it works, then adjust its instructions on the left to adjust how it works until you’re happy with it.

Step 4: You can also add specific data that the AI will draw from, such as documents and files. Do that and reevaluate how it affects the way AI works. You may want to adjust the instructions after giving him access to the data.

Step 5: You can also customize potential AI functions. Choose whether you want DALL-E to have art generation capabilities, access to the Bing search engine, or deeper data analysis. You can also customize which plugins it has access to, if any.

Step 6: When you are satisfied with the way your new custom GPT works, select green Publish or Update finalize button. You will then be able to find your new custom GPT in the left menu with OpenAI GPTs and all your other creations.

How to split your custom GPT

One of the best features of the new, custom GPT creations is that you can share them with anyone. In the future, when the OpenAI custom GPT shop is created, you will even be able to monetize these AIs.

Step 1: Create a new custom GPT as above or select the three-dot menu next to an existing custom GPT and select the edit function.

Step 2: Make the desired changes to your custom GPT, but instead of choosing green Update buttons immediately, first select the menu icon with three dots next to it.

Step 3: From the pop-up menu, choose whether you want the AI to be usable only by you, everyone using those plugins, or anyone with a connection.

To share it with whoever you want, select it Anyone with a connection

Step 4: Once you publish or update your custom GPT, you can now share it with anyone by sharing the custom link.

Why can’t I create custom GPTs?

If you find that your ChatGPT page looks like the screenshot above, you’re out of luck. You can’t create a custom GPT yet because you don’t have access to the future.

However, as long as you have a ChatGPT Plus subscription, you will get access in the near future. Just wait a few more days and you should be able to start making your own models.

Now you can create your own custom GPTs. Let us know some of your favorite creations, we’d love to feature them.

Keep an eye out for that OpenAI GPT store too. There is a potentially lucrative new career in creating functional chatbots for anyone who wants one.
