Australian start-up lets tourists turn baraatis for Indian weddings. Here’s how

An Australian start-up travel company called JoinMyWedding has created buzz for offering foreign tourists a taste of Indian weddings. Founded by Hungarian-Australian Orsi Parkanyi in 2016, the company promises the ‘ultimate cultural immersion’ by inviting travelers to pay to attend these grand weddings, which it describes as ‘a true cultural celebration’.

How can a traveler attend these weddings?

According to information published on the company’s official website, the start-up first reaches out to couples who are willing to host foreigners. The company then receives important details such as the couple’s wedding itineraries which are then shared on the company’s platform for tourists willing to pay to attend.

What are the fees to attend these Indian weddings?

Fees to attend a wedding fall in the range of US$150 (₹12,488) per person for one day to US$250 or (₹20,814) for two days.

The fees paid by the traveler not only mark their entry into the ceremonies, but also act as a ‘gift to the couple’. Moreover, if the wedding does not meet one’s expectations, the company has a refund policy.

The website also contains testimonials from travelers who attended the wedding and a list of the experiences of the couple who hosted them. Christoph Flamm, a 35-year-old tourist from Austria, opened up about his experience and said, “It was the best thing I did in India. Food, people, culture – you’ll get it all!”

Ireland’s Niamh Kelly described it as ‘a great way to blend in with the locals and make friends’.

Here’s what netizens have to say

Several social media users took to X and shared their thoughts on the startup idea. Calling it ‘brilliant’, one user said: “I’d be more than happy to be a part of this,” while another added, “it’s one way to offset costs and add a bit of glamour.”

“I’d be more than happy to be a part of this,” said another.

“It reminds me of Made In Heaven when he makes all the strangers attend the wedding as the so-called distinguished guests,” the user pointed out. A similar concept was explored in Zoya Akhtar’s recently released show Made in Heaven.
