Find a fishing rod

Before you go looking for the Loot Shark, you’ll need to pick up a fishing rod. These are scattered around the map, but can usually be found in barrels or chests near large bodies of water. It’s best to look for a fishing spot – marked by a white ring in the water where fish swim below the surface – as fishing rods are often found near these hot spots.

Stock up on powerful weapons and while searching for a fishing rod. The opportunity to ride Loot Sharks is a new popular activity in the Fortnite, which means you’ll likely see others on shore trying to do the same thing. If you show up with just a fishing rod, you’re an easy target for the other 99 players.

Once you’ve found a fishing rod and a few good weapons, it’s time to look for the Loot Shark. They can be found swimming in almost any body of water on the map, but we recommend looking near The Fortilla, Rickety Rig, or Sweaty Sands. Sharks can usually be found swimming in these areas, and they all have fishing rods nearby.

Loot Sharks are easy to identify, as you can see the dorsal fin sticking out of the surface of the water. They move quickly but tend to stay at a distance from the fishing rod, so there’s no need to jump in a boat and fish in the middle of the ocean.

When you find it, approach it with caution! Some sharks will jump out of the water to attack players and can even destroy buildings. Sharks can be killed, but will take a lot of damage before going down.

Catching a Loot Shark is the same as catching a fish. Simply equip the fishing rod and throw it in front of the target. It may take a few casts to get your bobber in sight of the shark, but there is no penalty for pulling the line and casting again. With a little luck, a big fish will take the bait — and take you along for the ride!

Now that you’ve latched onto the Loot Shark, you’ll have complete control over its movements. You’ll be able to jump over obstacles, use turbo boosts to speed away from enemies, or even shoot back at them by equipping weapons and zooming. It may take a few minutes to get used to the controls, but it helps to know that you control Loot Shark’s movement and not your main character. Sharks are not the best form of transportation in the country Fortnite — given that you have to give up an inventory slot just to drive it — but it’s a fun diversion, and necessary to complete a few new challenges.
