Herman Xennt on Netflix’s CyberBunker: The Criminal Underworld
Herman Xennt is featured in Netflix Cyberbunker: Criminal Underworld as “007 James Bond quintessential villain.” Soon after, a man with long silver hair appears on camera, ready to answer questions from the crew of a true-crime documentary from a German prison in Trier, where he is currently serving a six-year sentence starting in 2023.
Cyberbunker, directed by Max Rainer and Kilian Lieb, tells the story of how Herman, a charming man with long blond hair and a black leather coat, and his group of “mysterious Dutchmen” bought a NATO bunker beneath the German holiday destination of Traben-Trarbach in 2013. CyberBunker 2.0 , Xennt’s new underground residence, quickly attracted global illegal enterprises.
CyberBunker began providing “impenetrable hosting” for websites in 1995 in another former NATO bunker in Goes, the Netherlands. This means that they offered extremely secure hosting for websites with illegal or sensitive content, but at a considerable cost. The New Yorker claimed that most users had pornographic websites in the late 1990s.
However, the operation moved to Traben-Trarbach, Germany within a few years, and websites hosted by CyberBunker included The Pirate Bay and WikiLeaks, authored by Julian Assange. According to the Associated Press, police also said it was the source of a botnet attack that took down the routers of about a million users against German telecom operator Deutsche Telekom in late 2016.
Germany’s cybercrime team began investigating Hermann’s operations in 2015. Authorities discovered that Xennt’s data processing center hosted websites on the Dark Web, including illegal marketplaces. Some of these sites sold narcotics, helped people commit credit card fraud, or participated in other scams. This information was found through intercepted web traffic.
Along the way, Herman worked with Irish drug gang leader George “The Penguin” Mitchell to develop his “money maker,” an encrypted phone network and apps.
In September 2019, a raid by more than 600 German police resulted in the seizure of the server and the arrest of seven people, including Xennt.
Where is Herman Xennt today?
Although Xennt Herman was cleared of any involvement in the crimes on the websites hosted by CyberBunker, he was found guilty in December 2021 of organizing a criminal group. Herman received a prison sentence of just under six years. In September 2023, the German court rejected his appeal, making the decision final.
Ultimately, in December 2021, Xennt was found guilty after a German court heard testimony from Xennt’s defense team, former associates, business partners and prosecution witnesses. The 62-year-old was found guilty of forming a criminal organization with CyberBunker, although he was acquitted of aiding and abetting crimes on the sites he hosted.
Because of this, he was sentenced to five and a half years in prison. He contested his conviction, but in 2023 the higher court confirmed it forever, so he will remain in prison until he serves his sentence. According to the documents, he is currently in prison in Trier, Germany.
Nevertheless, Xennt claims to be innocent to this day:
“My trial was not fair, and neither was the verdict,” he said in the documentary series. “Nothing I could have said would have mattered. I already had convictions before I was arrested.” He also indicated that he “didn’t even notice” that his clients were using his platform for criminal purposes before adding cryptically,
“I have many plans for the future. I know that there is no one else who wants or can do what I want. You can’t stop me. I will still achieve my goals. Everything is ready. I just have to go home. I want to, and eventually I will be able to realize my vision of a better world. No one can stop me.”

The Herman Xennt family
The only members of Herman Xennt’s family that we know of are his father, his sister and his brother-in-law.
His sister and brother-in-law, Anna and René Van Wolferen live in a village near Arnhem. René is both an auxiliary firefighter and employed in a pharmaceutical company. He was wearing a T-shirt that said “We face what you fear” and had a beeper on his belt. Anna is a tall, nervously kind woman with brown hair.
Xennt had always lived “on the edge,” according to the Van Wolferens, but he was by no means a snarling genius. Instead, he was an intelligent, idealistic and perhaps naive individual who got himself into trouble. They were concerned about his mental health while in prison, as he spent most of his days playing chess by himself and had little contact with the outside world.
When Xennta’s father passed away in January 2020, his lawyer requested permission for her client to attend the funeral. The appeal was rejected. Xennt then requested a laptop to watch the service’s live feed, but this request was also denied.
The Van Wolferens talked time and time again about Xennt Herman’s childhood bedroom in Arnhem and how he had always been fascinated by futuristic aesthetics. René said Xennt turned to cannabinoid treatment in late middle age because he wanted to stay “forever young.” He described his brother-in-law as someone with arrested development.

Xennt and Angelique soon separated, with her retaining primary custody of the boys. He also has a son who was born in 2019 by another mother.
After purchasing the Traben-Trarbach estate, Xennt invited his now young adult sons to work there. Mother Angelique, who was not employed at CyberBunker, joined them. A childhood friend of the sons who used to go to the complex claimed that the family was not fully together because Angelique and her sons stayed in dormitories above ground with other employees.
