The Great Netflix Password Crackdown is still happening

It would be a bit of an exaggeration to say that Netflix confused almost everyone with its promise to end password sharing. It started in several countries, but with different rules. And we still don’t have specifics on how it will work in the US

But make no mistake: it’s still happening. In its Q1 2023 earnings report, Netflix said: “We are pleased with the latest launch of paid sharing, and while we were able to launch broadly in [the first quarter], we found opportunities to improve the experience for members.” He didn’t describe what those opportunities for improvement are, but noted that we should still expect a “broad launch” in the second quarter of the year — in other words, anytime now, but by the end of June at the latest.

“We learn more with each rollout and incorporate the latest knowledge, which we think will lead to even better results,” the company said, and “we believe this will result in a better outcome for both our members and our business.”

Fair enough. But we still don’t really know how it’s going to work here. Netflix previously said more than 100 million households shared accounts. In 2022, it launched a pilot program where accounts could pay more — about $6 a month — to allow up to two other users to use the same account without having to actually live with the account owner. While many might consider this a double whammy, it at least provides a relatively inexpensive way to allow, say, a college student to still watch Netflix without paying their own bill.

Maybe we’ll see that from Netflix in the next month or two. Or maybe we’ll get something completely new, like a student discount tied to a university address.

But stay tuned. Coming.
