In early October 2023, George Santos caught the internet off guard after he mentioned Matheus Gerard as his husband.
“My husband Matt and I are heartbroken at the news of Sen. Feinstein’s passing,” George tweeted on X. “Sen. Feinstein was a trailblazer who dedicated more than 30 years of service to her country. Our condolences to the Feinstein family as they grieve this difficult time. loss.”
Many joked that it was a “hard launch” for the marriage as the husband’s unexpected announcement amid a tribute to the highly respected political figure sparked a barrage of suspicious comments online.
Tim Hogan, a Democratic strategist, waded into the internet conversation with a post about X. “Did George Santos just fireball his husband … after Sen. Feinstein’s death?” he wrote. “Using the death of a US senator to launch your secret husband hard is somehow the gayest thing George Santos has ever done,” tweeted Kendall Brown. “10/10, amazing job.”
There was no mention of Matheus before, but The Messenger found references to his husband. In 2020, George Santos said he lives with a partner named Matheus (aka Matt) and their four dogs.
George responded to the online uproar early Monday morning by sharing a picture of himself with Matheus Gerardo, who was named as his husband Matt.
Just before 2:30 a.m., alongside the picture, George wrote: “For those wondering and freaking out, this is Matt, my husband since November 2021… Not sure where all these “hard launch” comments are coming from. He further added: “Or maybe it’s just that people are starting to realize that the media has played a trick on them with all the nonsense they’ve written about me? Regardless, have a fantastic time pretending the media portrayal is correct.”
But amid a long-running scandal surrounding his fake CV, his sexual identity was called into question when it was revealed in December 2022 that he had previously been married to a woman. “I have dated women in the past. I married a woman. I’m okay with my sexuality. People change.”
According to reports, Santos married Uadla Vieira, a Brazilian, in 2012; despite this, their weddings were mostly hidden from the public eye. According to people who recently spoke to The Daily Beast, Santos dated Pedro Vilarva in 2014 and the two shared an apartment until Vilarva moved out in 2015.

The Advocate reviewed pharmacy licenses in New York and New Jersey and found that neither pharmacists nor pharmacy technicians are licensed under that name.
