“In all my years living in the West, the vacation season was long and extended. Christmas holidays started after December 15 and continued until the New Year. In China, Chinese New Year has a long holiday. Unfortunately, in India Diwali holidays usually last 1 or 2 days in business offices. In years like this when Diwali falls on a weekend, there is one day off. Many of us travel to be with family across the country, sometimes far and wide,” wrote Radhika Gupta.

“While we can take days off, is there a concern for a longer holiday break, maybe a week, as a country so we can enjoy the holiday season and family time without counting the days?” she added.

“In many MNCs no holiday like Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday,” X user shared. “Absolutely right. We need to think about this and make Deepavali a big holiday instead of just a day or two off,” posted another. “Navratri to Diwali might be a good move,” suggested a third. “Maybe in the west they don’t have as many national holidays holidays like we do in India throughout the year, but there is certainly merit in this thought,” wrote a fourth.

A few also shared their opinion and tried to explain the reason for such short holidays during Diwali. “I believe this is not only happening in India as we already have a large number of public holidays spread throughout the year for regional festivals and to commemorate great personalities (combined with weekends off),” user X commented. “Diwali is in the north, Durga pooja is in the east, different regions have different important festivals. Can’t generalize with Diwali,” shared another.
