You have the eyes of a hawk if you can spot the secret optical illusion in this World Cup badge

Founded in 1921, the national team made its debut at the Independence Centennial Games in Guatemala City.

After defeating El Salvador 7-0 in their first game, Costa Rica won the trophy with a 6-0 victory over Guatemala.

The team quickly rose to prominence, becoming the second strongest team in the CONCACAF zone behind Mexico in the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

However, they fell in the rankings in the 1970s while Honduras, Haiti and Canada rose.

After missing out on the 1998 World Cup, Costa Rica changed its national team badge from a simple red, white and blue crest to one that included an image of a person playing soccer.

The design was refined in 2001 – a year before the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan – and reworked again in 2014 to include a golden figure among red, white and blue circles.

However, at first glance, some fans claimed that the circular lines create the illusion of an endless tunnel.

Costa Rica’s badge has since changed again, but this time it looks completely different.

In 2021, the current coat of arms was introduced – drawing inspiration from the Costa Rican flag and national shield.

Several people were interviewed as part of the badge design process, including team members, former players, journalists and officials from the Costa Rican Football Association.

Costa Rica is currently 39th in the FIFA rankings.
