In this confusing optical illusion, we challenge you to try to figure out which “g” is spelled correctly.

And maybe it’s harder than you think.

A group of psychologists from Johns Hopkins University found that most people are unaware that there are two types of lowercase “g”.

One of them is the open tail “g” that many use every day – and it appears as a circle with a hook hanging from it.

But the other is a more refined version – which appears in some books and newspapers, as well as in Serif fonts such as Times New Roman and Calibri.

We’ve all seen both types of letters, but can you now spot the correct version when faced with four variants?

In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception & Performance, 38 volunteers were asked to list letters they thought had two types of print.

In the first experiment, “most participants failed to remember the existence of looptail g,” said co-author Gali Ellenblum, while only two people were able to spell looptail g correctly.

The volunteers were then asked to look for examples of the “g” tail in the text and were asked to recreate the letter.

In the end, only one person was able to complete the task successfully.

Finally, those who took part in the study were asked to identify the letter “g” in a multiple-choice test with four variants of the letter – but only seven out of 25 managed to do it correctly.

So don’t worry if you’re having trouble, because it turns out that many of us know that letter, but can’t always recognize it.

Explaining this puzzling discovery, Michael McCloskey, senior author of the paper, said: “What we think is happening here is that we learn the shapes of most letters partly because we have to write them in school.

“‘Looptail g’ is something we never learned to write, so we may never learn its form.”

So, have you managed to spot the correct version of the letter yet?

Fear not if you haven’t succeeded yet, because we have a solution below.

Optical illusions are becoming a popular daily activity for those who want to test not only their eyesight, but also their brain power.

If this puzzle was too easy – or too hard – for you, why not try these fun games.

The incredibly difficult word search challenges you to find the word “rat” in just 10 seconds.

You can also have some seriously impressive visual skills if you can spot a mouse hiding in the undergrowth in less than 10 seconds.

If you want a further challenge, you need 20/20 vision to spot the pelican hidden in this summer vacation scene in less than 10 seconds.
