Apple Numbers is a handy spreadsheet app that comes with macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. Numbers works like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, so you can track sales, inventory, budgets, stocks, and similar numerical data.
To analyze the data you enter, you probably have numbers you want to add up. We’ll show you how to add to Apple Numbers a few different ways on Mac, iPhone, and iPad. This allows you to choose the method that works best for you on the device you are using.
Add using Insert in Numbers on Mac
One of the fastest ways to add to Numbers on Mac is to use the Insert menu. You can access this from the menu bar or if you have a button on the Numbers toolbar.
Step 1: Numbers are smart enough to know which numbers you want to add if they are in a column or row. So you don’t have to select the cells first unless you want to.
If you select the cells you want to add, skip the next step.
Step 2: Select the cell where you want to put the sum.
Step 3: Select or Insert > Formula from the menu bar or Insert button on the toolbar. Then choose Amount.

Step 4: You will see the values in your cells summed in the selected cell.
If you select a cell, you’ll see the formula for the Sum function in the formula bar at the bottom. Here you can edit the formula as needed.

Enter the Sum function on the Mac
If you prefer to write the formula yourself, you can instead enter it using the Sum function for the cells you want to add.
Step 1: Select the cell where you want to place the sum.
Step 2: Type the equal sign (=) and you will see the formula box appear.

Step 3: Enter “Sum” in the box and then select it from the options that appear.

Step 4: You can type the range of cells you want to add or select Value in the formula, then drag through the cells.

Step 5: Use Tick green to enter the formula into the cell.
Like the Insert option, you’ll see the sum of the values in the selected cell and the formula in the box at the bottom.

Use a quick formula in Numbers on iPhone and iPad
Similar to the Insert menu in Numbers on Mac, you have a quick way to add numbers on iPhone and iPad.
Step 1: Select the cell where you want to place the sum.
Step 2: Tap Cell button at the bottom right.
Step 3: Scroll down inside the popup and select Amount at the bottom, under quick formulas.
Step 4: You will see your total added in the selected cell.
Enter the Sum function on iPhone and iPad
If you want to manually enter the formula for the sum function, this is another option on iPhone and iPad.
Step 1: Select the cell where you want to place the sum.
Step 2: Tap Cell button at the bottom right.
Step 3: Choose New formula in the pop-up box that appears.
Step 4: Type “sum” in the box, then select it from the list of options.
Step 5: Choose Value in the formula. Then enter a range of cells or select it in the list to place it in the formula.
Step 6: Use Tick green to enter the formula into the cell.
Step 7: Then you will see your cells added to the selected cell.
