Esther Rolle as Florida Evans
Esther Rolle played Florida Evans, the matriarch of the Evans household. Florida and her husband James are working-class parents living in a Chicago apartment complex while raising their three children. Rolle is best known for her appearance on Good Times and her character on the series’ parent sitcom, Maude. Roll died in 1998, just nine days after his 78th birthday, from diabetic complications.

Florida Evans, the wife of James Evans Sr., was played by John Amos. James is a Korean War veteran struggling to find a job due to his lack of school in this episode. Despite his willingness to support and care for his family, it was difficult for him to find a steady job, and the family often had financial difficulties. After three seasons, Amos left the program due to creative disputes with creator Norman Lear; the actor went on to star in the 1977 miniseries Roots, for which he was nominated for an Emmy. Amos currently resides in Tewksbury Township, New Jersey, with his two grown children.
Ja’Net DuBois as Willona Woods
Ja’Net DuBois played the lively Willona Woods, the Evans family’s confidant and close friend. DuBois is a singer, songwriter and dancer; she co-wrote and sang The Jeffersons theme song and has been in several movies, including Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and dozens of television shows. The actress had two children; however, her son Raj Kristo Gupta died of cancer in 1987. According to Meaww, he died at the age of 36. DuBois died of cardiac arrest on February 17, 2020, at her home in Glendale, California.

Ralph Carter played Michael Evans, Florida’s youngest child, and James Evans. Although he is best remembered for his role in Good Times, Carter’s career did not begin in television; appeared in the musical “The Me Nobody Knows at the age nine”. According to ABC 7, he went on to play roles in stage musicals such as “Tough to Get Help,” “Dude” and “Via Galactica.” He also released the album When You’re Young and In Love, with which he debuted on Soul Train. Carter has now retired from performing and lives a quiet life in New York with his family.
Bern Nadette Stanis as Thelma Evans Anderson
Thelma Ann Evans–Anderson, played by Bernadette Stanis, was Evans’ only daughter. After her time on the program, Stanis wrote five books: Situations 101: Relationships, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Men Only, Situations 101: Finances and Last Night. Her most recent acting credits are from 2015 and 2016 and include the television series Black Jesus and the movie “36 Hour Layover”, also known as “No Regrets”.
Jimmie Walker as James “JJ” Evans Jr.
Jimmie Walker played Evans’ oldest son, James “JJ” Evans Jr. Walker was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1975 and 1976 for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for his performance as JJ, as well as for writing the catchphrase “Dy -no mites!” Walker now travels the country promoting his stand-up comedy.
