Sven Olaf Kamphuis on Netflix’s CyberBunker: The Criminal Underworld
The main character in Netflix CyberBunker: Criminal Underworld is Sven Olaf Kamphuis, also known as CB3ROB aka “SK”, the mastermind behind CyberBunker. According to Kamphius’ Crunchbase page, he was a well-known spokesperson and founder of CyberBunker in 1998. In essence, CyberBunker was a modestly founded “bulkproof” hosting company in the late 1990s.
Originally founded as a web hosting company, it is housed in a defunct NATO bunker in Kloetinge, the Netherlands.
Sven possesses the ability to completely shut down the internet if he so chooses, but he also chooses to focus on other areas of his own fantasy world, so if there’s one word that best describes him, it would have to be chaotically brilliant.
In addition to being an avid Internet user, the native of Utrecht, Netherlands, has been a longtime partner of Herman Xennt since joining CyberBunker in the 1990s. He even had the brilliant idea of making the Republic of CyberBunker, one of the richest and most technologically capable nations in the world, into a nation based on their organization.
“We actually declared independence,” explained Sven in the documentary series. “We don’t want to be on your map. We have our own society. We have our rules, we have our laws, we have our everything.”
Sven was Crown Prince/Vice President, although he is also said to have always been Minister of Foreign Affairs, Telecommunications, Transport and War. Their king/president was the Dutchman Xennt. So it should come as no surprise that he took control of the situation when, in the early 2010s, they started having problems with the spam-focused non-profit organization Spamhaus and its partners in the UK.
Sven resorted to the only tactic he knew when Spamhaus blacklisted CyberBunker for running too many websites that published a lot of information in the public domain and for refusing to negotiate a peaceful resolution. It is said to have launched a major cyber attack by releasing a focused stream of data that was so large it affected millions of people around the world by slowing down the internet for over a week.
For this reason, on April 25, 2013, at the request of the Dutch authorities, he was taken into custody by the Spanish authorities near Barcelona. He was then extradited and formally charged with multiple distributed denial of service (DDos) attacks.
According to sources, Sven worked out of a bunker and used the van as a mobile computer office, packed with enough technology to hack any network, anywhere. But unfortunately, the judges suspended Sven’s entire sentence, including the 55 days he had previously spent awaiting extradition, so even though he was found guilty and sentenced to 240 days in prison in 2016, he avoided prison time.
Furthermore, although the prince continued to play a significant role in the CyberBunker, he was not detained when the Germans expanded their facility in 2019 because he was not even present. Moreover, he was not charged with anything later.
Where is Sven Olaf Kamphuis today?
Sven Olaf Kamphuis now lives in Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands. According to reports, Kamphuis may have retired from the scene after 2014. It is still unknown to what extent he is connected to CyberBunker’s post-Kloetinge phase. In 2013, after CyberBunker spokesman Kamphuis was detained, the group decided to build a new bunker in Traben-Trarbach, Germany.
However, in Germany, several individuals observed their actions. In 2015, German authorities publicly intercepted traffic coming from the bunker. The United States government launched a crackdown in April 2019, arresting individuals suspected of running the Wall Street Market and seizing servers belonging to CyberBunker in Germany.
This sequence of events ultimately resulted in the closure of the German CyberBunker in September 2019. Law enforcement seized hundreds of drives and the site was shut down. Herman Xennt led the team’s daring attack on the German bunker, but escaped arrest and criminal charges – a fate that befell Sven Kamphuis. Regardless of whether or not Kamphuis was involved in the German version of CyberBunker, he appears to have escaped punishment after serving two months in prison.
Sven did not receive as severe a punishment as some others associated with CyberBunker. This was the final chapter in the CyberBunker story, which took several unexpected turns and left many unanswered concerns regarding the role of the founder and the ultimate fate of the individuals involved.
“Their law does not apply to us,” Sven said in the Netflix documentary. “We do not stand above their law, we stand completely outside their law [as a free nation]. That’s their law, not ours. Maybe there are some core values that overlap, like don’t kill your neighbor and things like that. But other than that, our law is quite different from theirs.”
