The news of NFL star Matt Ulrich’s death has shocked the football nation, and fans are paying tribute to his wife Alison Ulrich and their four children.
As she made the emotional announcement, Alison wrote on her Facebook: “Our beloved, unique Matt has passed and is in a better place,” Alison wrote. “Matt, we love you so much. I miss you so much. We all want you back for just one more day. Another hug Another kiss Another laugh Another joke Another boy wrestling. This life without you seems impossible. Please pray for peace and comfort for the boys. They lost their biggest fan, coach and friend.”
Alison and Matt were married before 2011. They celebrated their anniversary on July 24th.
Matt signed a free agent contract with the Colts shortly after the 2005 NFL Draft, and played two seasons on the active roster, making ten appearances. He returned to Chicago after his time in the NFL, where he founded a sports performance clinic in 2007. He soon moved to Montana, the place Matt said in his bio that he and his wife, Alison, dreamed of raising a family.
Speaking with Montana Sports, Matt also talked about his wife and why he moved to Montana. “My wife, Alison, actually grew up on a dairy farm in Manhattan. She worked on a dairy farm and was actually teaching in Alaska at the time. So we kind of worked remotely from Alaska to Chicago. And I promised her when we got married that we would raise our children in the mountains. And I didn’t know exactly what that meant. Is it Denver Is it Anchorage Is it Bozeman Is it somewhere else? But the clouds parted and I also had the opportunity to change careers and move my family here,” said Matt.
After Matt’s untimely death, friends of the family started a GiveSendGo campaign, with the money raised going directly to Alison.
The description reads: “As a way for the community to support Alison, Gunther, Dalton, Bowden and Thoreau as they move forward, this GiveSendGo campaign was formed to help people get involved. All funds will go directly to Ulrich’s boys. Thank you for your continued prayers, support, love and raising their family.”
Twenty thousand dollars was contributed by Tom McMakin, CEO of Profitable Ideas Exchange, where Ulrich worked until his death.
Colts owner Jim Irsay announced Matt’s death Wednesday morning, writing on X: “I am heartbroken to hear that Matt Ulrich has passed away. Matt was only with us for two seasons, but he left his mark on many. Great guy, I hear he was a great dad – and was a Super Bowl champion. My prayers to his family.”
Matt, who grew up in the Chicago area, started playing football in high school. He was a standout forward who later played football for Northwestern University in his hometown. As team captain in 2004, he proved the vitality of the Wildcats. The Indianapolis Colts signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He spent two seasons with Indianapolis, where he beat the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
In 2011, Matt and former Northwestern teammate Adam Kadela co-founded DexaFit, a national network of facilities providing metabolic analysis and body fat assessment, after moving to Montana.
Later, Matt also served as managing director and partner with Profitable Ideas Exchange, a community of “unique individuals with many lived experiences,” including former NFL players, film producers, and Peace Corp volunteers, who aim to “spark meaningful, intimate conversations among leaders in business, non-profit and non-governmental organizations who want to solve their most pressing challenges,” according to the group’s website.
