Nothing to worry about, but these checkmark icons offer a little information about the status of the Messenger messages you’re sending. Want to know what each of these tick icons mean? Keep reading to find out.

What does the check mark on Messenger mean?

The checkmark icons you see after sending a message on Messenger aren’t just random symbols. These are icons that are part of a larger series of message indicators that Messenger uses to tell you the current status of your sent message. These statuses can be one of the following:

  • Your message is still being sent.
  • Your message has been sent successfully.
  • The message was successfully delivered to the intended recipient.
  • The message has been viewed by your recipient.

But not all of these statuses are marked with checkmark icons in Facebook Messenger. There are only two of them. In the next section, we’ll go through all the icons used to indicate the above statuses, including checkmark icons.

What does each Messenger status icon mean?

Note: The colors of each icon below may vary except for blue and white. You can also see purple and white. Or even gray and white. We’ve mentioned the color blue below because that’s what Facebook’s help center guide currently says about it.

If you see an empty blue circle…

Your message is still being processed. It is still being sent. This means that Messenger has not yet received your message.

If you see a blue circle with a white center and a blue tick…

The message is officially considered “sent”, but not delivered. And there is a difference between the two. For Messenger, “sent” just means that Messenger has received your message and will deliver it to your friend. And “delivered” means your friend has received the message but hasn’t looked at it yet.

If you see a blue circle with a blue center and a white tick…

This is an icon that means your message has been successfully delivered to your friend. Your message is now sitting in your friend’s Messenger inbox, waiting to be read.

If you see your friend’s tiny profile picture…

Then it means that your friend has viewed your message. Well done! Your Facebook Messenger message has been successfully sent, delivered and viewed!
