JK Rowling has opened a counseling center in Scotland for survivors of rape and sexual assault. This center is limited to services for transgender women and does not include transgender staff. The support facility, Beira’s Place, is based in a former town hall and describes itself as “Edinburgh’s center for support of sexually assaulted women”. Her “Happy Holidays” reply came in response to a tweet promoting her new business venture while also cheering her on over the holiday season. Pink News received a statement from the support organization, which read:
“Beira’s Place services are exclusively for women. Under section 212 of the Equality Act 2010, women are “women of all ages” and Beira’s Place services are for women 16 years of age and older. This service is provided under the Equality Act 2010, which provides for single-gender services and a strategy for same-sex employees in diverse settings where reasonable.”
