When a woman shared her experience with a tattoo artist who requested thousands of dollars for a sketch, it sparked the Tattoo Gate controversy. Courtney Monteith, a TikTok user, posted a video about meeting with a tattoo artist who presented several designs to her. Initially, Courtney contacted an admired tattoo artist about getting a fox tattoo on her arm. The artist informed Courtney that there was a “design fee” and charged $180 for an online session. Later on, Courtney disclosed that she received three different prices for the design – the lowest being $1,500 for a concept sketch with minor revisions and potentially costing up to $6,000.

Courtney shared a story on TikTok using hashtags such as #badbusiness, #tattoohorrorstory, and #worstexperience. She had chosen the cheapest option to get a sketch for her tattoo which resulted in receiving a completely different design than what she had asked for. Despite providing images of what she wanted, the tattoo artist blamed Courtney for not being explicit enough about her preference for full cuffs. When Courtney expressed her dissatisfaction with the design, the artist demanded an additional payment of $2,260 on top of the $1,000 upfront payment for the tattoo appointment to redo the sketch. At that moment, Courtney was not informed about “collaborative design” compensation options; hence she gave up on tattooing but lost $2,600 in total. Another person reported being “scammed” out of a total of $4,000 by the same tattoo artist. The TikTok videos are considered part 1 and 2 of sharing their experiences with this tattooist’s bad business practices. More information is expected to be shared soon by PKB news in regards to this case.
