Shohei, a Japanese trainee of SMROOKIES, recently revealed the K-pop hero who motivated him to pursue a music career: EXO’s Sehun. The first episode of Welcome to NCT Universe featured hosts Sungchan and Shotaro greeting the trio before debuting Shohei, Seunghan, and Eunseok. The three of them talked about various topics, and one of them was Shohei’s role model. In one powerful sentence, he spoke of the hero who pushed him to follow in his footsteps. He declared:
“I want to become a singer after witnessing EXO’s Sehun…”
After the hosts joked that it was just Sehun because EXO used to have 11 members and now only 9 members, the SMROOKIES member replied:
“That’s right. All I want is the result of Sehun (hyung).”

SMROOKIES’ In Welcome to NCT Universe Ep. 1, Shohei sent a congratulatory video to his idol, EXO’s Sehun.
The latest variety series, Welcome to NCT Universe, brings together all the members of NCT (127, DREAM, and WayV) and SMROOKIES under one roof, with Sungchan and Shotara as hosts. The show debuted on November 16, 2022, with SMROOKIES members Shohei, Seunghan, and Eunseok appearing as guests.
At one point during the event, Sungchan questioned Shohei’s decision to pursue an idol career. The 26-year-old trainee immediately responded with EXO’s Sehun. He later said that he met his ideal type once at a company event and was lucky enough to talk to him.
“I was lucky enough to have lunch with him once. It was like a nightmare.”
Because of shyness, the 26-year-old idol couldn’t talk to him much. This statement inspired hosts Sungchan and Shotaro to come up with an interesting idea. They asked a member of SMROOKIES to send Sehun a video message. The request surprised him, but he still completed it.
“How are you? Long time no see.” Shohei here. I love you so much, Sehun hyung. I am always on your side. I hope to have many meals together with you in the future. “I admire you.”
Sungchan, Shotaro, Seunghan, and Eunseok were all excited after receiving a text message from the SMROOKIES member. This isn’t the first time Shohei has mentioned EXO’s Sehun as his motivation to enter the world of K-pop. He told WWD Korea earlier this year that he fell in love with singer EXO at first sight after seeing his performance on the 2014 song Overdose.
The announcement of episode 2 of Welcome to NCT Universe, which premieres November 17, hints at an even more exciting gathering of all the NCT men. Newcomers will form teams and compete with their seniors. Episode 2 promises many touching and cute moments between the superstars and the trainees. The next episode of Welcome to NCT Universe will air on Kocowa TV on November 23, 2022.
