Format FIFA World Cup 2026
The format of the tournament has been significantly expanded, welcoming 48 teams from the previous 32. With the teams divided into 12 groups of 4 countries, the championship battle promises to be more exciting than ever.
The eight third-placed teams from each group as well as the top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16. From the group stage to the final, there will be a total of eight matches instead of seven.

Teams to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

In the next version, a total of 42 teams will fight for the coveted trophy, 16 more than the previous seven.
The division of places by continental union has been determined:
AFC (Asia): 8 direct slots + 1 intercontinental play-off slot.
CAF (Africa): 9 direct slots + 1 intercontinental play-off spot.
Concacaf (North and Central America, plus the Caribbean): 6 direct slots + 2 inter-federation play-off slots.
CONMEBOL (South America): Six direct slots + one play-off spot between the federations.
OFC (Oceania): One direct slot + one UEFA confederation (Europe) play-off spot: 16 direct slots.
The three host nations will automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking three places in the Concacaf.
